Review: Lost Girl, S2 Ep 19, “Truth and Consequences”

Air date: Friday, August 24, 2012, 10/9C on Syfy

Rating:

What a heavy episode. True to its title, Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) has to deal with the fallout of a tough decision. The Ash (Vincent Walsh) demands Bo’s (Anna Silk) loyalty during the impending battle with The Garuda but she can’t make that promise. Her sense of right and wrong (“I am not an executioner”) is so intact that when the final scene occurs, it is quite jarring and unexpected. I don’t think I was expecting to see pixies acting as The Ash’s spies but it was a pretty cool bit of TV magic.

Kenzi has a tough choice to make

I really felt for Kenzi in this episode. Despite Trick (Rick Howland) and Bo’s exhortations to protect herself and leave town to make a life with Nate (Aaron Ashmore), Kenzi instead chooses to remain with Bo. I knew she would. Her tie to Nate is not as strong, and the two women are true partners. They met each other at a time of great uncertainty and, let’s face it, a childhood crush didn’t stand a chance against a solid bond between two strong women. At least, it should always be that way. In many ways, women ARE stronger than men. It breaks Kenzi’s heart to tell Nate how she feels but at the core of it, she knows she made the right decision. The fact that she’s human, though, will make her an easy target during the great battle. I think Trick is right—she’s a liability to Bo so, in one way, Kenzi’s choice to stay put is selfish. But I really don’t see how she could make any other choice. She was a runaway (we still don’t know much about her background), and meeting Bo brought meaning and structure to her life, and their relationship is built on mutual respect and friendship. You just don’t mess with the female bonds.

Seeing Bo so enthralled with The Glaive (Ingrid Kavelaars), considering she’s not easily impressed with Fae in general, was an interesting departure from her usual demeanor. “I was blown away by The Glaive. I mean, she’s Oprah without all the free cars.” I liked that The Glaive impresses upon Bo that she’s a good example of a strong Fae woman leader and should be lauded for her heroism. Sure, she flatters Bo for her own selfish purposes but her compliments are true—Bo is a true leader and I think she will be a huge figure in the upcoming battle. Her being unaligned will work well in her favor.

Bo tells Kenzi she must get away before the great battle with the Garuda

Watching as Nadia (Athena Karkanis) falls ill puts Lauren (Zoie Palmer) in a semi-frenzy, trying to find a serum to cure her. Did you think the shower scene reminded you of Psycho? That was a nice little homage. Too bad there was no blood. Nadia freaks out, pleading with Bo to kill her. I was confused as to why she went to see Bo. What did Nadia expect from her? We won’t know the answer to that now since Bo has blood on her hands. As Lauren’s partner, we had no history on Nadia.

“Truth and Consequences” has so much going for it, especially the solid acting by Silk, Solo, Walsh, and Howland. Kavelaars did a fine job playing The Glaive as superbly confident, and then displaying complete shock when she’s delivered to The Ash. My favorite scenes, though, were between Trick and Kenzi, and Bo and Kenzi. Solo just blew me away with her natural acting ability; she’s an actress who can make anyone look good. Mark my words—she’s here to stay.

  1. She has definitely come a long way from season one. We’ve seen such tremendous growth from her as an actress. Season three is going to be terrific, I think.

You are right about Anna Silk’s acting. It seems that she is not given enough credit for it, and she has been improving tremendously.
