Review: Wilfred, S2, Ep. 209 – “Honesty”

Honestly, I rather liked “Honesty.” It was reminiscent of the Wilfred of yore (season one). There were funny moments, weird and awkward moments and moments that crept into the darker side, which is what I like.
Admittedly, I’m sad Wilfred doesn’t focus more on Kevin (Rob Riggle). Riggle’s full potential hasn’t been utilized; he’d make an amazing addition to the cast as a more visible fixture, in my opinion. Instead, Kevin is pegged as the guy who sold company secrets, which is the main cause of Ryan’s (Elijah Wood) current unemployment status. I’m hoping they’ll find a way to bring Riggle back. Seriously, he could be a marvelous catalyst for Ryan and Wilfred’s (Jason Gann) characters. Kevin is like the human version of Wilfred. I know it’s an oxymoron since Wilfred is a guy in dog suit but you know what I mean…right?
If you can’t use your friends for dog-sitting and scoring pot-candy, what good are they?
As the episode progresses, Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann) asks Ryan for an enormous favor— for him to arrange an interview with Kevin’s attorney, who just so happens to be Ryan’s mysterious father. We all know Jenna is just leading Ryan on, but in all fairness, Ryan’s refusal to tell Jenna about his involvement in the whole “pot candy” and subsequent “squishy tits” debacle gets him into more trouble.
Wilfred is a cat-napper, and I’m not talking about afternoon snoozes on the couch. After an altercation with a local feline, Wilfred goes Silence of the Lambs and kidnaps six neighborhood kitties, trapping them in a never-before seen stone-lined hole in Ryan’s basement floor, complete with trap door. The ludicrous aftermath of Wilfred’s latest scheme is quite…let’s just say, if you recall Christian Bale’s profanity fueled tirade while on the set of Terminator Salvation, well, that describes the scene of Wilfred directing a masked Ryan in a strange “cat killer video.” It was awkwardly funny.
Is that a box of kidnapped kitties or you just happy to see me?
While I’m still waiting to see who Ryan’s dad is and how the story arc will play out, “Honesty” was moderately entertaining; much better than the previous two episodes. Have you noticed Wilfred is almost always at Ryan’s house even though he’s Jenna’s dog? Even when Jenna is home, Wilfred is with Ryan. I know Ryan dog-sits a lot but damn. I’ll reluctantly admit I’m curious to find out whether Wilfred is real or a figment of Ryan’s imagination. I want to know if Ryan is as mentally unstable as his mother.
Jenna admitting her own misgivings was pretty cool. I mean, if you didn’t know she was abusing Ryan’s kindness, you’re really not paying attention. I just hope Ryan will start heeding all the life lessons Wilfred has taught him and put them into daily action. I know there’s more to Ryan’s story than what we’re seeing. I’m sure the daddy issues will certainly bring about a whole new side of Ryan we’ve never seen before. For example, when Wilfred is egging Ryan to channel a deeper rage, the way Ryan grabs those formidable looking torture tools…it’s like he’s a natural. Scary!
Let’s just hope there aren’t any real skeletons in Ryan’s closet. (No, not the one leading to the basement; the proverbial closet).
