HBO Renews “Game of Thrones” for a Second Season

HBO Renews "Game of Thrones" for a Second Season 1

I find it interesting that some networks renew some shows after only one episode, while others, wildly popular with fans (think Chuck, among others), languish til the very last minute waiting for the all-important call telling them their show has been renewed. How happy everyone involved in “Game of Thrones” must be to have learned the show has been granted a second season already.

Review - Nurse Jackie, Season 3, Episode 4 - "Mittens" 2

Once again our favorite nurse searches for new hiding places for her stash of drugs. At least, Jackie (Edie Falco) and Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best) have mended fences. That makes me happy. I love their heart-to-hearts.

Review – Nurse Jackie, Season 3, Episode 3 – “Play Me”

Review - Nurse Jackie, Season 3, Episode 3 - "Play Me" 6

The words “Play Me” seem to have more than one meaning besides being the title. Perhaps they refer to God (Michael Buscemi, yes he’s Steve Buscemi’s brother, reprising his role from last season) stealing a street piano so he can play it for Zoey (Merritt Wever); or perhaps to Kevin (Dominic Fumusa), who uses his sister Tunie (Jaimie Alexander) to spy on Jackie for him; or it could be Coop (Peter Facinelli) playing Thor (Stephen Wallum) to get his help with a fantasy football league in the hospital. There’s a lot going on in “Play Me,” and it’s all good.

USA Taking Over the Summer with Nine Original Series

USA Taking Over the Summer with Nine Original Series 8

I am so excited for the summer to begin as some of my favorite USA series will be returning – “White Collar,” “Covert Affairs,” “Burn Notice,” “Royal Pains” and “In Plain Sight.” On top of that, USA has announced it will have two new original series, “Suits” and “Necessary Roughness.”

Movie Review – “Source Code”

Movie Review - "Source Code" 9

“Source Code” is a glitsy, science fiction version of Harold Ramis’ comedy, “Groundhog Day” combined with the twist you would find in “Twilight Zone.” Gyllenhaal does an admirable job with this movie, which is a relief given the amount of flops he’s been in recently. He captures the nuances of his character beautifully, whether it’s Capt. Stevens or Sean.

Showtime’s “Homeless” and “House of Lies” Get Full Orders

Showtime's "Homeless" and "House of Lies" Get Full Orders 10

I remember the days when all the good tv was on broadcast networks, and the premium channels were reserved for movies that you either didn’t get a chance to catch at the movies, or couldn’t afford to go to. No so anymore. Back in 2010, Showtime announced they were greenlighting two new series, “Homeland” and “House of Lies.” Today, they announced both series have received 12-episode orders and will begin production this summer.

Mildred Pierce, Parts 4 and 5, Sunday, April 10 12

While many have complained the Depression-era drama, “Mildred Pierce,” is too slow, as have I, I’m still interested enough to find out how the show ends. Mildred opens another restaurant; she throws Veda out of the house after an argument; she marries Monty and makes up with Veda; all leading up to a shocking revelation that changes Mildred’s life forever.

Review, Nurse Jackie, Season 3, Episode 2 – “Enough Rope”

Review, Nurse Jackie, Season 3, Episode 2 - "Enough Rope" 14

Directed beautifully by Steve Buscemi, fighting to keep friends is a recurrent theme throughout “Enough Rope.” Jackie (Edie Falco) is struggling to hold onto her best friend, Dr. O’Hara (Eve Best). Coop (Peter Facinelli) is trying to make amends with Sam (Arjun Gupta), while Eddie (Paul Schulze) wants to hold onto his friendship with Kevin (Dominic Fumusa), sans lies. And so it goes on another wonderful episode of “Nurse Jackie.”
