On Monday, May 9, 2011 in Budapest, Hungary, ABC’s four-part mini-series Titanic will begin shooting with cast members Linus Roache (Batman Begins, Law & Order), Toby Jones (Infamous, Frost/Nixon) and Geraldine Somerville (the Harry Potter films). “Why?” you may ask. After all, there have been so many accountings of what happened on April 15, 1912 when the HMS Titanic sunk. Well, maybe it’s just to take advantage of the centenary anniversary next year of the sinking. Or maybe, it’s been a long time since any of the broadcast networks have run a mini-series and ABC wants to be the first to resurrect this genre.

Penned by Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes, the show, to be released April, 2012, promises to tell the story from the perspectives of different people, ranging from steerage passengers to upper class guests. Each part of the mini-series will focus on a different person’s point of view, culminating in the explosive conclusion. In addition to Roache, Somerville and Reid, the cast includes Linda Kash (Cinderella Man, Best in Show) , David Eisner (Flashpoint), Celia Imrie (Bridget Jones’ Diary, Kingdom), Toby Jones (Captain America, W.), Perdita Weeks (The Promise, Four Seasons), Lee Ross (Centurion, EastEnders), Jenna-Louise Coleman (Waterloo Road, Emmerdale), Sophie Winkleman (Peep Show, The Palace), Steven Waddington (Sleepy Hollow, The Tudors), David Calder (The World is Not Enough, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), James Wilby (Gosford Park, Clapham Junction), Antonio Magro (Little Dorrit), Dragos Bucur (The Way Back, Youth Without Youth) Stephen Campbell Moore (Ben Hur, Ashes to Ashes), Lyndsey Marshal (Hereafter, Being Human, Rome), Mark Lewis Jones (Robin Hood, The Other Boleyn Girl, Troy), Ruth Bradley (Primeval), Peter McDonald (The Damned United, City Of Vice) and Sylvestra Le Touzel (Amazing Grace, Northanger Abbey).

While producer James Cameron’s Titanic was mainly a love story, I’m sure people will inevitably draw comparisons. It will be interesting to see how ABC’s mini-series holds up. I understand Cameron plans to re-release the film in 3-D next April to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of that fateful night.
