Caroline’s (Beth Behrs) birthday is coming up, so what do you expect? A party? From this motley lot? I think not. But Han Lee (Matthew Moy) is cute for trying to get Max (Kat Dennings) on board with the idea. It’s just a party in the diner. What can go wrong? Well, plenty! But first, I have to ask– why is Han the only person who even considers throwing a party for Caroline? Is it because everyone is flat broke? Or just lazy? It’s probably a combination of both.

Caroline (Beth Behrs) gets cozy with cute website designer Edwin (Tim Chiou)

Well, Caroline seems intent on pushing the cupcake business forward so she hires Edwin (Tim Chiou), a cute website designer. For two girls who are always broke, it seems a luxury to hire a designer. They could’ve picked up the skills, considering how easy it is to build a website. But where would the fun be in that?

By now, it’s par for the course that Oleg (Jonathan Kite) will flirt with Sophie (Jennifer Coolidge), Sophie will be sickened by his advances, but Oleg will still continue. Eventually, someone is going to give. (They end up making “hand love,” which is too ridiculous. I mean, I’ve heard of hand job, but hand love?) Sophie doesn’t want to be considered a whore, yet that’s the first impression Caroline and Max have about her. It’s an unfair judgment, I know, but how can anyone think otherwise when all she wears is tight dresses that hug her curves? I wouldn’t exactly envision this as ideal attire for an owner of a maid business.

What’s a little strange—and off putting—is how Sophie becomes a voyeur while watching Caroline and Edwin making out outside the diner. From inside her limousine, she eats a cupcake and murmurs, “Yum. Yum. So hot.”  She’s like a dirty old lady getting her kicks from being a peeping Tom. It’s not particularly funny, just gross. And the fact that Caroline wants to make her tryst with Edwin a secret is a little silly. She hasn’t gotten laid in over a year and she’s worried about what people will think of her? Does a one-night stand really mean you’re a whore? She should pull a Max and do what she wants; she’s a pretty responsible person.

Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) try to get in to visit Caroline's father in prison

“And the One-Night Stands” isn’t all bad, though. While the party in the diner is a bust, Max comes through when Caroline says all she wants for her birthday is to visit her father in prison. Leave it to Max to know how to find transportation to the prison and offer herself up for a full body search so they can get visitor passes. How street can she get? Well, a one-night stand named Irish (Brian Robinson) is in the same prison and he goes absolutely nuts at her, which cuts visiting hours. Even though Caroline only gets a glimpse of her father, she says it’s enough to make her happy. She wasn’t expecting to see him at all so I guess a glimpse is better than nothing.

The moral of this episode seems to be, ‘Don’t have one-night stands. They usually come back to haunt you.’
