Review: Haven, S3, Ep. 306 – “Real Estate”

A dark and spooky night; check. A creepy house in the woods on a desolate road; check. An adventurous young couple dressed in costume; check. Mystery is in the air and it’s perfect for a Halloween-themed episode of Haven.

After a young girl bursts into the Haven PD Halloween party to report her boyfriend has gone missing inside the old Holloway house, Audrey (Emily Rose) and Duke (Eric Balfour) head out to investigate. It seems these two have been partnering up quite a bit lately, since Nathan (Lucas Bryant) is off doing his own thing with the elusive “tattooed people” known as “The Guard.” And Nathan is getting awfully cozy with his main contact Jordan (Kate Kelton). Is it me or is there something ominous about Jordan? Why is she helping Nathan after learning his true reasons for investigating The Guard? Perhaps she fancies the notion that Nathan can actually touch her without experiencing severe pain like others do. I guess that’s enough of a motive to keep him around for a while.

Observations:

Our newest member to the Haven PD, Det. Tommy Bowen (Dorian Missick), gets a lot more than he bargained for when he accompanies Audrey, Duke and Dr. Claire Callahan (Bree Williamson) to the Holloway house. The house literally has a mind of its own, so to speak, and it’s playing a dangerous game of hide-n-seek with the front door, and skewering Little Bo Peep on the chandelier. I don’t think I like these games. However, there is something Tommy says to Audrey later that gives us a glimpse of what is to come with his story line: “Anyway, I know what it’s like to have a past that you’re runnin’ from.” Hmm…what kind of past is that, I wonder?

Nathan is getting closer to Jordan…is he still undercover or is he developing real feelings for her now that Audrey has pushed him away?

Audrey seems to be having more flashbacks in the Holloway house but these flashbacks are causing her physical anguish in the form of “cerebral hematomas.” She gets some vital information—not only about the house, its owner, and what happened to the entire family—but she sees “The Colorado Kid.” Now Audrey has a face and a name, “James Cogan (Steve Lund).” So now that she has more information about who “The Colorado Kid” is, what does this mean for Audrey? She continues to push Nathan away and it’s moving him closer to Jordan. Doesn’t he realize her “No, it’s ok; I have other things to do” behavior is a sign she’s jealous? His pride is wounded and he’s allowing his father’s words to take root in his heart—he isn’t supposed to fall in love with Audrey because she’s too important to the “troubled people.” I am beginning to let doubt seep in, and it’s not looking good for Nathan and Audrey.

Dwight (Adam Copeland) tries to gain entry to the Holloway house with an axe but it’s no match for the supernatural strength of the structure. Next up…Explosives!

Dave (John Dunsworth) and Vince (Richard Donat) are very intriguing characters. They know more than they’re sharing with Audrey about her past. And they’re withholding information about Haven’s past, as well. But, they do care about what happens to everyone. Knowing what the house is capable of, Dave and Vince enlist Dwight’s help to get everyone out. “Potassium nitrate” and “C4” don’t seem like a great idea but they reconsider after everything that’s going on. I’m a little surprised Dwight goes along with the explosives idea. But, I guess men really do like to blow stuff up. I’m eager to find out how these three men came to know each other. That’s one hell of a back story I’m salivating for the writers to unleash.

The one fault with “Real Estate” is the shocking lack of Iain Glen throughout the episode. He plays the owner of the house, Roland Holloway. His unique “trouble” has caused a strange metamorphosis with his physical being. You’ll have to watch to fully understand. I think he’s such a great actor and would have loved to see more of him in this episode. What few scenes he did appear in were quite compelling. The subtle, calm way he answers Audrey, whom he thinks is Lucy, makes his response even more frightening. “You think that’s why I brought you here? For your help? … I watched my wife murder our children. I felt it and it’s your fault. You couldn’t save them in time. You didn’t save me. So now, you’re going to watch your loved ones kill each other.”

Funny lines:

Tommy to Audrey, Claire, and Duke: “Damn it, that’s perfect! Ghosts? Anything else you people wanna let me in on that goes on around here? Mermaids, aliens, Dracula?”

Duke: “I’m not sure about Dracula.”

Tommy to Duke: “If I knew we were gonna be teamed up, I’d of wore a costume too. (laughter) Jack Sparrow?”

Dave and Vince after Dwight’s unsuccessful attempt at chopping down the door:

Dave: “Told you so; it’s too strong.”

Vince: “Oh, I forgot you were an expert on evil architecture.”

“Real Estate” is a befitting Halloween episode. It not only captures the essence of Halloween with all the décor and costumes that some of the characters wear, but it also propels the story arcs for several characters forward. By the way…I think we haven’t seen the last of the house either.
