“You reap what you sow.” – The Governor
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the writers of The Walking Dead come up with something else to shock you. All I’ll say is I won’t ever look at a fish tank the same way again. Talk about being a collector of rare objects! I wasn’t wowed by “Walk With Me” but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I think the change of pace is refreshing but also a bit slow on the uptake. We’re being introduced to new characters and that can’t be done well with an overt amount of action.
Observations and thoughts:
Does anyone realize how cool it is that Michonne (Danai Gurira) uses her zombie pets as pack mules? Considering she’s on foot and in need of supplies, it’s smart to use the relentless creatures to do the heavy lifting and act as zombie “repellant.” She’s very wary of new people and doesn’t seem to trust easily. I think that’s a good thing considering the state of the world they’re in but does she have some special instinct that keeps her ahead of the game?
Yup, that happened. I still don’t know what it means, but the Governor creeps me out.
Oh, the many ways to kill Walkers. I often wonder why some people choose baseball bats to go after the zombies. You can almost sense the joy they get from bashing heads. The Walking Dead does not skimp on the gore. You want blood and guts, they give it to you in spades. This show is not for the weak stomached, that’s for sure. I don’t mind it; I like the authenticity the gruesomeness gives the show.
“Now, how’s about a big hug for your old pal Merle?” Merle (Michael Rooker) is back and packing a handy-dandy-Walker-killing appendage! Where’d he pick up that MacGuyver’d prosthetic? Rooker slips right back into character, taking him to a new level of cockiness. He’s come up in the world—got himself a new crew to run with, and it looks like he might even be someone with a little pull. I’m not sure if I like who he’s become but… at least he’s back. I missed him. Can he be trusted, though? I’d like to think he wants to be reunited with his brother Daryl (Norman Reedus) more than anything. And what a reunion that would be. I don’t think Merle would recognize the person Daryl has become. He’s no longer the “sweet one,” as Merle calls him. I hope that confrontation isn’t too far in the future.
Michonne is obviously suspicious of the new surroundings she and Andrea (Laurie Holden) find themselves in. I can’t say I blame her. “We want our weapons!” Why her request continues to be ignored isn’t clear. Yes, they are seemingly safe in Woodbury, but something is not right about the place. Andrea has slipped back into a presence of mind where she has no fear (and she talks too damn much). The problem with that is she’s being manipulated and doesn’t even know it. It’s a good thing Andrea has Michonne to watch her back.
Wasn’t this cozy? Andrea is eating out of the Governor’s hand while Michonne is keeping her distance. I think Michonne is on to something.
The Governor’s (David Morrissey) group kind of mirrors Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) band of survivors, doesn’t it? There’s a Dixon brother, a muscle guy, smart guy… it’s almost like Bizarro The Walking Dead. I like the diversion from the typical episode. We’re seeing the rest of the world outside of the everyday lives of our usual survivors. There’s still a military presence and other survivors who haven’t ended up in a rundown establishment like we’ve seen in previous episodes. I’m excited to see where the introduction of the Governor and his town takes us. We know one thing he’s up to, and it isn’t good.

Merle to Andrea and Michonne: “Hell, I think I’d piss my pants if a sonvabitch comes up to me with his mitts in his pockets. That’d be the one to be scared of—”

Andrea to the Governor: “Buzz is a nickname, Governor’s a title. There’s a difference.”

Michonne to Andrea: “My shit never stopped being together.”

This episode reminds me of a book I recently read, Shadows by Ilsa J. Bick. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world as well. There’s one character who heads up a militia group and is a ruthless prick, much like the Governor is proving to be. The whole setup of the town and the acquiring of supplies keeps me going back to the situations in the book. You have to wonder why no one questions where these things come from. Is there hope for the world with the Governor at the helm? He seems to have things under control. And is anyone else wondering what the hell is in that tea?
