This week, we get a mystery that comes in the form of a tiny gray box wrapped in red ribbon. Bo (Anna Silk) wonders if she should open it, but that’s saved for the end of “Fae Gone Wild,” which proves to be a satisfactory episode, although I do have some quibbles about it.

Bo visits the Naughty Lady Gentlemen's Club

First, I’m weary of the story arc of “Woman becomes stripper to make money.” The Fae world isn’t immune to the human world and they must find ways to navigate a society that forces them underground. I’m not arguing this point, but this story arc has been played out ad nauseum. Surely, the Fae are more creative at using their powers? If they can get creative with murders, why not aim for something more positive than stripping? When a mother, Donna (Maria del Mar), hires Bo and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) to find her young daughter Sheri (Cristina Rosato), it’s easy to figure out where Sheri might be—either on the streets or working in some unsavory job not of her choice. Sheri proves to be an accessory to a murder—under the forceful hand of Zephyr (Robin Kasyanov), who is later found gruesomely murdered. Here, we are introduced to a new class of Fae—the Selkies, a water spirit. Sheri and her mother are Selkies, only Donna never told her daughter she gave up her pelt to be with a human fisherman. Hence, Sheri doesn’t know she’s a Selkie, but learns this on her own, which leads her to the Naughty Lady Gentlemen’s Club.

Second, I’m missing the Bo and Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) dynamic. I know this is part of the storyline but I do not like it! I miss them together. And seeing Dyson with Ciara (Lina Roessler) rubs me the wrong way. The thing is, I’d like Ciara if she became part of Bo and Kenzi’s investigative team. Having Ciara on Lost Girl solely as a love interest is going to get boring, fast. We won’t get to know her better if all we see are love scenes between her and Dyson. Seeing them in a locked, naked embrace in the last scene of “Fae Gone Wild” felt a bit off to me, as if it were  a cursory cut and paste, and the writers didn’t know how to end the episode. If they’d left it with Sheri diving into the ocean, it would’ve been a more fitting ending. This is not to say the scene wasn’t well acted; there is plenty of chemistry between Holden-Ried and Roessler.

Bo and Sheri light The Hand of Glory

So, Bo confronts Lauren (Zoie Palmer) about her girlfriend Nadia (Athena Karkanis) being in a coma. The pain and hurt in Bo’s eyes? One can’t help but feel for her, but Lauren is merely a distraction from the pain of losing Dyson. I feel more for Lauren than I do for Bo, because she’s lost her girlfriend and deeply cares for Bo but Bo loves someone else. That’s a pretty effed up situation to be in. And not just that, but she’s mere “chattel” for The Ash and his minions, the payoff for finding a cure for Nadia.

Observations:

Trick (Rick Howland) is working on an investigation of his own, involving the deaths of some nuns. Apparently, he’s working with Lauren to determine why there is a sudden spate of violence between the Dark and Light Fae. I wonder where this storyline will lead us. I think we know now that Trick is the Blood King since he reveals himself as Fitzpatrick McCorrigan on a phone call.

Bo and Kenzi sum up my reaction to this episode with this dialogue (while discussing the missing girl case):

Kenzi: “Lying, sneakery, killers on the loose…”

Bo: “I’m feeling a distinct lack of joy for this one.”

Considering that two females wrote this episode, I feel they could’ve done better than a stripper storyline. I want to see more stories about female empowerment; Lost Girl has potential for plenty of interesting storylines involving women in strong roles. We do have The Morrigan, who’s a strong role model, but she’s not central to the show. I’m aware of the argument that women choose to become strippers or sex workers, but I don’t agree with it. If those women had better self-esteem or felt they had more choices in life, I doubt sex work would be one of them. In saying this, I don’t mean to put down those women who actually enjoy this kind of work, but I believe those women are not representative of most who work in the sex trade industry.

I want more Detective Hale (K.C. Collins)! Seeing him with Kenzi makes me wish he had a meatier role. Let’s give him more attention, shall we, writers?

Det. Hale (K.C. Collins) fights for the Selkies

So, what’s in that little gray box? It’s the key to curing Nadia. Only… it doesn’t look like a key, but more of a mystery. Now, this will be interesting!
