SDCC Sons of Anarchy Press Room with Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal

Katey Sagal and Kurt Sutter stepped into the Sons of Anarchy press room in great spirits. Sutter had every reason for feeling on top of the world — not only is his show one of the most successful shows on FX, it was also one of San Diego Comic Con’s most anticipated panels and cast appearances, with fans showing up en masse.

First, Sutter discussed his character, Otto, his process for writing, and what’s in store for us next season.

“After I kill people on the show, I take them out to dinner,” Sutter kidded. “If you get a dinner party invitation to my house, it’s not a good thing.”

Otto has an uncanny ability to make weapons out of nowhere, what can we expect next? His own teeth, I guess will be a weapon. He got ahold of a scalpel, what else has he used? A pencil and a crucifix. That one he requested, that one he planned. He does kind of weaponize things.

When you’re writing the show, do you get emotional? While I’m writing, all the time! I think that is part of my process. That’s why when I write, I kind of need to be alone. Whenever I write, I act out all the scenes; it’s part of the process. I don’t stage them but I need to hear them.  Part of the fun for me is when I get into it and when I’m in the process of doing it. It’s hearing the voices and hearing the dialogue unfold through these different people.”

Do you have a writing schedule? “I tend to do a lot of rewriting in the morning when I’m sort of awake and then I tend to do more story breaking and creative stuff at night. That’s what seems to be going on with me right now.”

What can we expect for next season? It’s only a matter of days. I don’t think we actually ever say it but it’s between three and five days. So, we play out Tara’s (Maggie Siff) going to jail and everything that is going on with Clay (Ron Perlman). We’re able to come in and see how that plays out rather than come in a few months later and just seeing the results of it. I wanted us to begin sort of inside of it and see the impact it has on everybody.

Sagal states there are a couple of “Really?” moments for her regarding some of her character’s upcoming storylines.

As we get to the finish of the show, there’s a lot more relationships — the stakes are lot higher. The tension continues to mount and I think that’s the case for this season  as we see a lot of those relationships we’ve damaged over the last five seasons kind of come back to haunt us.”

Are you on track with your mile markers for each of the seven seasons or have things changed? My mile markers for each season are pretty vague and I find that the looser I am with those mile markers, the better the seasons are. I do have a sense of where I wanted to end and how I want it to end.  At the end of each of season, I kind of have a sense of where I’ve wanted to end and the beginning of each season, of where I wanted to begin. It’s just a matter of how do we get there, what is the most original way to get there, so I say yes, we’re on track to do all that.”

Sagal went on to share her thoughts about Gemma’s increasingly conflicting storylines.

As an actor, it makes it interesting. That’s part of the journey of being an actor, that you’re exploring the human condition in whatever form that is going on. There are a few things in the season that I’m like, ‘Really?! Okay’ …

Does it feel like things are moving quickly now towards wrapping up the series?  I don’t really know that answer because I’m so close to the creator,” Sagal stated pausing with laughter. “I kind of know the pieces he’s thinking of so I don’t know if you’re going to watch it and go, ‘Oh yeah, we’re almost at the end.’”

After talking to Sagal, Sutter, and the show’s actors, its evident there is a strong sense of awareness of how their time together is in countdown mode and what a bittersweet emotion this is for them. The stakes will be definitely higher and fans should brace themselves for a violent and an explosive season six!
