SDCC Sons of Anarchy Press Room: Ron Perlman Discusses Hellboy and How Clay is No Longer in Control

Share

Ron Perlman is a Comic Con veteran and a fan favorite, thanks to his successful film career and his recurring role as Clay Morrow in FX’s hit drama series, Sons of Anarchy. In anticipation of his appearances at the convention, fans inundated me with questions about Clay and his starring role in the Hellboy franchise. There are some intense feelings about Clay’s future in the MC but I chose to start with the film project instead.

What is happening with Hellboy?I’ve heard of him.”

Perlman is notorious for being a clever jokester but he is also very shrewd. He knew what the question was about and shared his unique perspective of where the ‘threequel’ is.

For next season, Perlman says Clay Morrow is no longer in control of his destiny.

I just think it’s something worth fighting for and I am fighting for Hellboy 3 every day. I do know that Thomas Tull [Legendary Pictures CEO] is a very big fan of Guillermo [Del Toro] and he’s a very big fan of Hellboy as a character. I don’t know how he feels about me but I wouldn’t be surprised if he couldn’t be persuaded that this third installment, which has got to be epic because of the nature of how it all resolves itself, is worth putting some resources behind.”

How do you choose the projects you want to work on? I’m not in control of my career as much as people give me credit for being. The projects choose me. The only way I would say no is if I really don’t think I would be an asset. But if I read something that they send me and it’s really, really smart and unlike anything I’ve ever read before, and I can’t guess what is happening three pages from now and I love the character, 99% I’m going to say yes as long as it fits into the schedule, and as long as they put together a package of people I really want to work with. But that’s the way most of my work comes —something will arrive and I will have to decide, but if I don’t understand the character or feel the character in reading him, that’s the only reason I would say no.”

Do you watch your own stuff? Very rarely, I mean you have to. If you’re in Pacific Rim and you’re going to the world premiere, you have to stay because if they introduce you to a figure of 7,000 people and then you sit down, and all of a sudden you get up and the movie starts; people tend to notice.

Where is Clay in Season 6? “He’s in jail.”

"I am fighting for Hellboy 3 every day," Perlman revealed.

Oookay…how is Clay mentally and not physically then? He’s waiting, he’s waiting to die. He knows where he’s at; he’s completely lost everything. The betrayal of Gemma [Katey Sagal] at the last moment of season five — as good a chess player as he is and as much as he’s able to see the board and what is possible, and be three or four steps ahead of everybody, he never could have conceived what she did to him. So she breaks him.

The one thing that season five was him separating what’s important from what was unimportant. I’m willing to lose this; I’m willing to lose him. I’m willing to lose that but that’s the one thing I’m not willing to lose, and he spends the last half of season five seducing Gemma back into his life and that failure is worse than anything that could ever have happened to him. In season six, you’re going to see a man with no choices and a man who is completely no longer in control of his destiny on any level except for the spiritual one.”

Is he still planning his vengeance? That’s why you tune in. I don’t want to give too much away.”

There must have been a memo passed to all the Sons of Anarchy actors to limit their disclosure of plot details during Comic Con! Waiting stinks but in thinking of what Perlman said, I think we all know he’s right. You have to tune in to get the full effect and context of what is happening on the show. Fans will be able to do so when Sons of Anarchy returns to FX on September 10, 2013 at 9:00pm EST in a special 90-minute episode.
