I Need a Day. Retrospective: Suits – “The Other Time”

“The Other Time” is mainly a reference to the episode “Asterisk” when Donna (Sarah Rafferty) told Harvey (Gabriel Macht), “You’ve been over to my place exactly twice: the God awful dinner party and the other time.” But that isn’t the only flashback scene; there are many that mirror events both past and current.

Another One Bites the Dust. Get It? Review: True Blood – “Radioactive”

The recycled set, time jump to months later, and complete disregard for the essence of these characters set me on the road to Never-Againville. You fooled me once, writers, but not again.

More Power, More Problems. Review: The White Queen – “The Price of Power”

This week, the romantic tone shifts to a more somber atmosphere as power plays takes center stage. If the premiere episode were a fairytale, then “The Price of Power” is certainly a reality check as it flashes forward to the year of Elizabeth’s coronation as queen consort. The scene is a pinnacle moment in the episode with beautiful detail to wardrobe and style. Ferguson shines as she sits upon the throne with a regal air about her. Yet for every happy moment, there is always a downer. In this case, it’s Warwick.

Intense, Powerful, Violent. Advance Review: Sons of Anarchy – “Straw”

In the Sons of Anarchy season five finale, Jax (Charlie Hunnam) emerged as the MC savior but as “J’ai Obtenu Cette” came to a close, it became apparent that this accomplishment would come at a steep price. Tara (Maggie Siff) was charged and arrested for conspiracy to commit murder, the club stands divided, and its members were left to lick their wounds no matter which side they chose. August Maks (Billy Brown) and Lee Toric (Donal Logue), two very powerful men, sought to control SAMCRO, each with a very personal agenda to exact revenge. This is exactly where “Straw” picks up, and the show returns with an intensity not seen before. To put a spin on an old adage, there is no rest for the wicked.

Eye-Opening and Compelling. Movie Review: We the Parents (Documentary about the Parent Trigger Law)

WE THE PARENTS follows the first group of parents who attempt to transform their failing school under California’s new “Parent Trigger” law. This is a story about courage, empowerment, and parents’ love and dreams for their children and their futures. It’s also about an unprecedented law that encourages people to organize and change the status quo, and the controversy that ensues when the historical balance of power is disrupted.

Read Me My Rights. Review: Graceland – “Smoke Alarm”

As the game of cat and mouse continues in “Smoke Alarm,” the stakes increase when Jangles, a masked Caza Cartel boogeyman, leaves behind a trail of blood when hunting down Odin (aka Briggs (Daniel Sunjuta)). The question is who is the cat and who is the mouse because Briggs sets up a few traps of his own.

Poignant, Visceral, and Surprisingly Funny. Movie Review: Lee Daniels’ THE BUTLER

This is an amazing, Oscar® caliber film sure to garner much higher praise than I could ever write in this review. I absolutely love this film and highly recommend you see it. It’s poignant, visceral, moving, inspiring, and at times, very funny. From the cinematography, acting, set designs, locations, writing, and directing, this film is outstanding. I could feel the heat of the sun as young Cecil Gaines (Michael Rainey, Jr.) picks cotton in the fields with his father Earl (David Banner). I could feel the hatred as patrons of Woolworth spit on and shove activists lobbying to get equal service at the counter. I could feel the passion as Louis (David Oyelowo), Cecil’s (Forest Whitaker) eldest son, goes against his father to fight for what he believes as he joins the Black Panther Party. And I could feel the pain of Cecil mourning the death of one our nation’s most iconic presidents.
