Season 3, Episode 7
Air date: Monday, March 4, 2013, 10/9c, on Syfy
Rating:

Bo (Anna Silk) has to prepare for the Dawning sooner than everyone thinks. Why? Because she harbors a lot of guilt and regret and, apparently, when it comes to successfully completing the Rite of Passage, Succubi have a high failure rate, which is a huge barrier for Bo. She’s going to have to release those negative emotions before she can effectively pass the first test-crossing the threshold-which she is failing miserably, at the moment.

Bo and Kenzi run into Bo’s classmate from high school

We know Bo didn’t have a rosy childhood. Acknowledging that her adoptive mother Mary (Nola Auguston) is “a warped bigot,” Bo understands that returning home isn’t easy but Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) as her sidekick makes it a bit more tolerable. Realizing that turning into an Underfae is a real possibility, according to Stella Nashira (Deborah Odell), Bo is focused on stopping her devolution.

Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) doesn’t have a large role in “There’s Bo Place Like Home,” but staying clear of Bo’s situation is a really loving thing for him to do. Even when Trick (Rick Howland) figures out Dyson’s love for Bo has returned, and he informs Dyson that Bo’s relationship with Lauren (Zoie Palmer) won’t last, Dyson insists he won’t interfere. I’m pretty sure Dyson won’t tell Bo a thing until her relationship with Lauren ends—if it does. Bo and Lauren will always have a bond, though not necessarily a romantic one, but a bond nevertheless. But really, I’m ready for Bo and Dyson to be a couple again! Lauren still irritates me with her clinginess.

Is Kenzi more troubled than she lets on?

As for Kenzi, I love her new hairdo. It’s like she’s in a new phase of her life after breaking clean of the Norn’s curse. She’s back to her old self, imparting rapid, clever one-liners and sporting blunt bangs, but Bo senses Kenzi has been more traumatized by her experience than she lets on. But due to the urgent matter at hand, she decides to save her questions for later.

Considering what Bo says about her mother, I wasn’t expecting Mary to be overjoyed at seeing her long-lost daughter. Conveniently enough, though, Mary has dementia so the reunion is easy, allowing Bo to confess her true identity (“I am Fae. I’m Bo. Goodbye, Mom.”) without any real tension. What could have been a good look at how difficult forgiving a loved one can be is squandered when the writers waste a prime opportunity to reflect on the sometimes difficult nature of mother/daughter relationships. We didn’t have the chance to see a side of Mary that was cruel or bigoted, just a flash of what Mary used to be. In a way, their relationship seems glossed over, as if the writers wanted to hurry up and have Bo cross that threshold so we could get on to the real work of completing the Rite of Passage.

The thing is, Bo thinks crossing the threshold is the only barrier she has to overcome. Does she really think it’s going to be that easy? There’s a lot of work to do, still. The fatigue and weariness are clear in her face, and it seems she may not be up to the task, but with the team solidly behind her, she has an excellent chance of not becoming an Underfae. But first, she wants to know why Kenzi visited the Norn. Will Kenzi tell her the truth? Will Bo learn of Dyson’s sacrifice? You have no choice but to stay tuned!
