Review: The Big C, S3, Ep. 304 – “Family Matters”

Air Date: Sunday, April 29, 2012, 9:30 PM E/P on Showtime

Rating:

“…I’m the Steve Blow-Jobs and the Mark Fuckerberg of the gay phone sex industry!” ~ Sean

How can you not want to read a review after reading a quote like that? If I could start out my review with LMFAO, I would but using acronyms or texting jargon is just too overdone. Instead, I’ll tell you that “Family Matters” is one of the funniest episodes I’ve seen in all the seasons of The Big C. Sean (John Hickey) slays me every time he opens his mouth. And while the episode title sounds a bit heavy, the entire episode is not.

Observations/Thoughts:

Cathy and Paul attend one of Joy's speaking engagements

Cathy (Laura Linney) and Paul (Oliver Platt) are thinking of adopting a baby. I agree with Adam’s (Gabriel Basso) take on things though – they’ve had so many overwhelming things happen, is it really smart to be thinking about adding another mouth to feed to an already financially stressed household? And speaking of finances, how in the heck is Cathy paying for a round of drinks at The Naked Turtle on a teacher’s salary? Of course, she’s pretending to be a flight attendant named Alexis, but we know Alexis doesn’t make any real money. With insurance bills mounting and Paul still out of work, how in the world are their bills getting paid? Food for thought writers. I’m waiting on a foreclosure notice on their house any day now.

Adam and his new bible groupie Jesse (Kailie Torres) are starting to become a bit closer. Adam isn’t thinking straight – letting his hormones lead the way rather than letting his mind process everything that’s going on. I thought the stupid stunt Jesse pulled to show Adam “God” is protecting them was idiotic and childish. I’m not too fond of Jesse. She talks about being a good Christian yet her behavior seems contradictory. Adam is a little shit, too. He has a girlfriend – a good one in fact.

Joy asks Paul if he would like to be a guest speaker at her next gig

Joy Kleinman (guest star Susan Saradon) invites Paul and Cathy to one of her speaking engagements. I adore Sarandon! She’s still got it and is one sexy woman! With that said, I’m not digging her character. Joy seems to have an ulterior motive. What it is exactly is the question. She seems to dote on Paul and his blog but then she plants a kiss on Cathy who just explained the difficulties she’s having with the adoption. What is Joy really after?  I love what Paul says during his little speech, “You don’t have to die to wake up.” That’s a pretty deep message.

I was so pleased when Paul steps in as the voice of reason when Cathy decides to forge her doctor’s signature on a letter of good health. When I saw her stealing the stationery, my jaw dropped. Cathy seems to have this knack for thinking she’s entitled to a lot of things just because she has cancer. News flash – cancer or not you still have to follow the rules. I love Cathy most of the time but I loathe when she tries to use her illness for personal gain. Getting a better parking spot, ok, sure, no problem; trying to adopt a child knowing you are still undergoing clinical trials, hmm, let’s think about that some more.

Willy Wanker showdown! Who's the better Willy?

The best part of “Family Matters” is Sean meeting the originator of the Willy Wanker sex phone line, Willy (guest star Victor Garber). Garber is fantastic as a man who feels wronged by the system and is out for blood and his phone number back. But when Willy is faced with the harsh truth about who’s the better Willy, he isn’t going down without a fight. In fact, he’s a live-in stalker. Go figure. The banter between Willy and Sean had me laughing so hard, I nearly pissed my pants. Ok, I maybe peed a little.

Sean to Willy: “Did Steve Jobs invent the iMac? No. Did Mark Zuckerberg come up with the concept for Facebook? No. But did they both have the business savvy to make those ideas a thousand times better and therefore reap the rewards of said creations? YES! Face it buddy, I’m the Steve Blow-Jobs and the Mark Fuckerberg of the gay phone sex industry. You’re just pissed off ‘cause I’m a better Willy Wanker than you will ever be!”

The conversation and confrontation when Willy and Sean both answer an incoming call is hysterical. After Willy attempts to do things his way, Sean jumps in and takes the reins:

Sean (to the caller): “I bet you’d rather have my finger up your ass!”

Willy (to the caller): “And my Buddha shaped dildo!”

Sean (to the caller): “And my fist!”

Willy (to the caller): “And my riding crop!”

The caller to Sean and Willy: “All at once? That’s too many things up my ass! Too many! Too many things up my ass!”

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
