Review: Lost Girl, S2 Ep 11, “Can’t See the Fae-Rest”

Ciara (Lina Roessler) gains a larger role in “Can’t See the Fae-Rest,” though I’m not sure it will lead to anything but heartbreak. Having lost Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) once, could she survive another loss? It’d be a shame to relegate her to secondary status on Lost Girl because I rather like her, and she proves she can be part of Bo’s (Anna Silk) investigative team (unofficially). They can be friends, Bo says, and while I do believe her sentiment is genuine, once Dyson recovers his love for her, Ciara will be shunted to the side. Dyson will struggle with his feelings, but his love for Bo will win out.

By the way, did you catch that look Dyson gives Bo when he tells her she looks nice in that god-awful shapeless dress Ciara gave her? Could he be developing a “new” love for her, nothing to do with the former love that died? This is by far the most interesting story arc for me. Even if Bo is not my favorite character, I still want her to be with her one true love, even if it means their relationship might become boring. Although, they’d still be dysfunctional as long as Bo resists taking sides in the Fae world. Something tells me she won’t be able to resist for long, mainly because of the evil machinations of The Ash (Vincent Walsh). Right now, there’s an uneasy peacefulness between them, and I’m not really sure why. Bo isn’t sure why, either.

The conflict in this episode centers on wealthy male socialites, their deaths a result of being strangled and crushed. At first, the team—including Det. Hale (K.C. Collins)—thinks the killer is Lita S. (Sitara Hewitt), a snake Fae, but snakes don’t crush their victims, they spit venom. Meeting Maganda (Pamela Matthews) for the first time, she appears to be a homeless woman—a benign character who explains to Bo the meaning of her name (“pretty of the forest”). Once it’s known she’s the killer, you can’t help but feel her sorrow and empathize with her. She is a Batibat, a tree Fae who’s lost her tree home as a result of it being cut into pieces to be sold as decorative items. If you lost your home, wouldn’t you do anything to get it back? I actually teared up when Maganda lamented her loss (“every leaf grew in my heart”); those were some pretty poetic lines the writers came up with, and Matthews did a terrific delivery.

Maganda wants her home back

Poor Lauren (Zoie Palmer) is having a rough time trying to get Nadia (Athena Karkanis) back. She has the ancient African nail, but when The Ash refuses to help her, and she reacts in a rage, he banishes her to a solitary cell. That will certainly keep Lauren out of the picture for a while. Is this an indication of the writers’ uncertainty about her ongoing role? Could she be turning into a lesser character? After all, if Nadia makes a successful return to life, it’d be an interesting parallel to Ciara’s and Dyson’s relationship. (Which, by the way, Dyson is clearly not committed to when he tells Ciara he’ll try to make her as happy as possible. How could Ciara buy this? Oh, she’s in love with him. Go figure. What people will do for love.)

Call me a cynic, but none of these relationships is going to end well, except maybe Det. Hale’s and Kenzi’s (Ksenia Solo). Wasn’t that hug between them at the police station the sweetest? It warmed my somewhat black (haha) heart. Now, that’s a relationship based on mutual respect and adoration. They have terrific chemistry together. Don’t you think so?
