An Intimate Look at the Art of Scamming. Review: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – “Charlie’s Mom has Cancer”

An Intimate Look at the Art of Scamming. Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - "Charlie's Mom has Cancer" 1

From the title of this week’s episode of Sunny, “Charlie’s Mom Has Cancer,” I knew this was going to be very irreverent, and man, was I right! There are scams galore, and not one, but two, twists at the end of the episode I never saw coming. As Dee (Kaitlin Olson), Mac (Rob McElhenney) and Charlie (Charlie Day) struggle with their faith, Frank (Danny DeVito) loses his memory, and Dennis (Glenn Howerton) realizes he has no feelings. Add in Diddy (as in Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs) stretching his acting chops, and you have one funny episode.

Movie Review and Official Trailer: Strand Releasing Presents “California Solo”

Movie Review and Official Trailer: Strand Releasing Presents "California Solo" 2

Lachlan MacAldonich (Robert Carlyle, The Full Monty, Trainspotting, Once Upon a Time) is a washed up, burned out, embittered former Scottish pop rock guitarist who is now working on an organic farm outside Los Angeles. Self-exiled in America for the past 12 years, Lachlan cannot face the fact that he was responsible for the drug-related death of his brother and fellow band mate/lead singer of the 90s grunge band, The Cranks. Nor can he go back to the UK where he will surely face the wrath of family, friends, and fans. What he does, and how he deals with the direction his life is taking is the basis of this melancholy tale.

Another Fantastic Character Study. Review: Homeland - "The Clearing" 4

“The Clearing” is a very character intensive episode, and while not as powerful as other episodes of Homeland this season, it is still quite gripping.

Who Has to do the Dishes? Review: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – “The Gang Gets Analyzed”

Who Has to do the Dishes? Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - "The Gang Gets Analyzed" 5

Sunny does a great job of delving deep into its archives, bringing up old storylines like Dee wanting to be an actress, Dennis being an Ivy League snob and God’s gift to women, and Charlie screaming to get his point across. But that’s what Sunny is good at—using a tried and true formula that obviously works since the show’s been around for eight seasons, with a ninth already scheduled. Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Can Brody Really Be Trusted? Review: Homeland – “A Gettysburg Address”

Can Brody Really Be Trusted? Review: Homeland - "A Gettysburg Address" 6

There was no way “A Gettysburg Address” could have been as riveting as last week’s “Q&A,” but it still gives viewers enough to chew on to keep them more than invested. This week’s installment of Homeland raises a lot of interesting questions now that we’ve reached the middle of this stellar season, not the least of which is whether Brody (Damian Lewis) can be trusted, or whether his alliances still lie with Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban).

Talk About Being Naïve! Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - "Charlie and Dee Find Love" 7

Unfortunately, “Charlie and Dee Find Love” doesn’t live up to Sunny’s high comedic standards. I laughed and smiled but I didn’t have any good belly laughs or laugh-out-loud moments. It felt as if the writers were trying too hard to make this episode funny, and it didn’t work.

TV News: HBO Joins NBC Universal for “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together”

TV News: HBO Joins NBC Universal for "Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" 8

By now, the entire country is well aware of the devastation Hurricane Sandy wreaked up and down the east coast this past weekend. And here we are, days later, and friends and family, even entire neighborhoods, are still without food, power, and the creature comforts we all take for granted. As this great nation often does, now is the time to pull together and help out any way we can. And that is exactly what HBO and NBC Universal are doing with “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together.” The live one-hour special will air Friday, November 2 (8-9 pm ET/tape-delayed PT), and all proceeds received will go directly to the American Red Cross relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy. For further details, like how to donate, and which stars will be performing, please read the HBO press release below.

“It’s the Lies that Undo Us.” Review: Homeland – “Q&A”

"It's the Lies that Undo Us." Review: Homeland - "Q&A" 12

Homeland continues to raise the stakes with “Q&A” as Brody (Damian Lewis) is interrogated, first by Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) and then Carrie (Claire Danes). In a display of brilliant writing, directing, and acting, “Q&A” delves deeper into what makes its two main characters tick, while at the same time staying true to the terrorist story that has its viewers, me included, glued to their screens every Sunday night. As much as I loved last season’s “The Weekend,” another Carrie/Brody-centric episode, I think “Q&A” is even better, and will surely help to garner Emmy® awards for both leads next year.

The Walking Dead Meets Law & Order. Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - "The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre" 15

What a fun, Halloween-themed episode this is. There are all sorts of strange occurrences, some very scary moments, frightening music, and, of course, lots of comedy. “The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre” is a perfect mash-up of two wildly popular TV shows—two of my favorites, actually—and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Brody Revealed! Review: Homeland – “New Car Smell”

Brody Revealed! Review: Homeland - "New Car Smell" 16

OK, so Saul (Mandy Patinkin) doesn’t keep Brody’s (Damian Lewis) confession tape a secret, like I surmised he might do last week. Instead, he shows it to Estes (David Harewood) and, together, they hatch a plan to thwart any Jihadist plot Brody might be involved in. But things don’t go as expected in “New Car Smell,” and by the end, Brody is outed for the terrorist he is. Could Homeland move any faster?

Hilarity Ensues. Review: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – “The Gang Recycles Their Trash”

Hilarity Ensues. Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - "The Gang Recycles Their Trash" 17

With the garbage men in Philly on strike, Mac (Rob McElhenney) thinks The Gang should collect the trash themselves, but it’s Frank (Danny DeVito) who comes up with the brilliant money-making scheme in “The Gang Recycles Their Trash.” Even though the Gang has doubts about his plan, Frank convinces them to go along with it, telling them this time, the scheme will work as long as they listen to him. If you’re a fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you know something—hell, probably everything—is going to go wrong.

Murder and Suicide. Review: Homeland – “State of Independence”

Murder and Suicide. Review: Homeland - "State of Independence" 18

“I was right.” Three simple words that helped to restore Carrie’s (Claire Danes) sanity, which, as we saw in “State of Independence,” was on a perilous ledge. Suicide and murder are the main plot points; although they were weak at times, they are saved by excellent acting, and serve to dish up a great, intense, character-driven episode.

What to do with a Nazi Grandfather on Life Support. Review: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, S8 Premiere - "Pop Pop: The Final Solution" 19

If season eight’s first two episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are any indication of what’s to come, we are in for some of the funniest and most irreverent treatments of serious topics I’ve ever seen. As usual, Sunny wastes no time getting to the characters’ inappropriateness and political incorrectness. As “Pop Pop: The Final Solution” opens, Dennis (Glenn Howerton) and Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson) have to decide whether to pull the plug on their ailing Nazi “Pop Pop” (Tom Bower), while the rest of The Gang go in search of the Nazi treasure Pop Pop brought home from the war.

A Most Compelling Turn of Events. My Review: Homeland, S2, E2 – “Beirut is Back”

A Most Compelling Turn of Events. My Review: Homeland, S2, E2 - "Beirut is Back" 20

“Beirut is Back” is filled with some interesting and intriguing story lines on many fronts, although the most compelling focuses on Carrie’s (Claire Danes) meeting with Fatima (Clara Khoury). Brody’s (Damian Lewis) friend and fellow Marine, Mike Faber (Diego Klattenhoff), asks Brody to look into the official report regarding Tom Walker’s (Chris Chalk) death and assassination attempt that resulted in the death of Elizabeth Gaines (Linda Purl) last season; and Cynthia Walden (Talia Balsam) asks Jessica (Morena Baccarin) to help with a fundraiser for a group of veterans. These story lines all have far-reaching effects on the characters, as well as the basic story line.
