Exclusive Interview - Bob Thiele Jr.: How the Music of Sons of Anarchy Takes Chances 1

Sons of Anarchy has not only become FX’s premier drama series but it has also redefined how a TV series utilizes music as a powerful narrative element. The partnership between series creator Kurt Sutter and music supervisor Bob Thiele Jr. has resulted in a distinct sonic style in which the music parallels the importance of visuals and the acting.

Trust No One: Murder by Proxy – Is Anyone Ever Getting Out of Charming? 2

With each new season, expectations become higher for the Sons of Anarchy finale. The focus this season has been on Jax’s (Charlie Hunnam) journey from prince to king as he tries to reverse the damage inflicted on the MC by Clay’s (Ron Perlman) self-serving ways. As the season concludes, can Jax accelerate the end game as he initially intended to do, or has the power of the gavel negatively affected his focus?

It’s A Big Day in Charming: Will Clay’s Going-Away Party Tear SAMCRO Apart? Retrospective: Sons of Anarchy - "Darthy" 3

My screenwriting instructor often talked about how the first few minutes of a great script should hint at everything that is about to happen. “Darthy” should be a case study for this principle as it does just that. But not only do the first minutes tell us loads about what to expect, they also pay respect to one of the most critical moments of Sons of Anarchy.

Walking Away from the Drugs & Guns – Is Jax’s Win Really Epic for SAMCRO? 4

The clock is ticking for Jax (Charlie Hunnam). Instigated by Clay (Ron Perlman), the Galindo cartel knows about how Otto’s (Kurt Sutter) latest prison murder will kill the RICO case, and the leverage the Feds have on SAMCRO. To save the day, Jax must make a series of movable parts work together in a severely constrained window of time.

Of Choices and Timelines: Who the Hell are you Jax Teller? 5

Memories of Opie’s (Ryan Hurst) death won’t go away as Jax (Charlie Hunnam) presses forward with his plans. The topic of making choices takes center stage again in “Cruxified” and given how high the stakes are with SAMCRO and the criminal organizations they work with, the decisions each member of the MC makes will have even more grave repercussions.

The frantic search for Frankie Diamonds (Chuck Zito) intensifies the battle for the gavel between Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and Clay (Ron Perlman) as each man makes moves to solidify his footing within the Club. As the glue that holds SAMCRO together continues to come undone, “Andare Pescare” keeps us glued to our seats.

Brother against Brother: A Ruthless Jax Hangs onto the Gavel. Recap: Sons of Anarchy, S5 "Ablation" 7

“I’m tired of watching my back.” Considering everything Jax (Charlie Hunnam) has dealt with in the last two seasons, I’m amazed it has taken him this long enough to say those words. But with his family possibly in danger, Jax sinks deeper into the darkness that has overtaken him ever since Opie’s (Ryan Hurst) death.

Violence continues to escalate in Charming but it isn’t the result of random delinquent activity. It’s being instigated by the “personal beefs” several people have. A tense sense of calm pervades the atmosphere although it feels more like a ticking bomb is about to go off at a moment’s notice.

Sons of Anarchy’s season five hadn’t reached its midpoint when series creator Kurt Sutter decided to ship off a leading character. The SAMCRO members are in turmoil as a consequence of losing Opie (Ryan Hurst), and Sutter doesn’t waste time cranking up the emotional dial further. Starting with this week’s episode, it looks like the Charming folks won’t forget about Opie’s death any time soon.

Ever since Sons of Anarchy creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter announced the death of a leading character, social media has been burning with guesses of who will end up in a box. Little did fans know that the tragic answer would unfold violently and graphically.

“Man, you guys are having a rough run!” Nero Padilla (Jimmy Smits) tells Jax (Charlie Hunnam). Truer words couldn’t have been said. Payback, revenge, and home invasions are the focus of “Authority Vested.”

Review: Sons of Anarchy – Season 5 Premiere - “Sovereign” – A Granny Fetish and Shark Infested Waters: Transitions, Lies and a Torching 16

“Previously on Sons of Anarchy” are words many have longed to hear since season four wrapped up following an effervescent escalation of conflicts. With everything that happened, I’m anxious to know several things: will Jax’s (Charlie Hunnam) personal agenda impact his leadership as the new club president? Will Gemma (Katey Sagal) and the SAMCRO members adapt to the changes in the club? With enemies closing in, can SAMCRO survive the shark-infested waters? Fortunately, “Sovereign” doesn’t waste time tackling these questions.

Totally Charmed at Chicago Comic-Con - Super Hero Flying is Not What It Is Cut Out to Be 19

I ventured for the first time to the 2012 Chicago Comic-Con, otherwise known as Chicago’s Wizard World. Attendance figures have not been released but the event, held at the Donald P. Stephens Convention Center), was packed. Having attended San Diego’s Comic-Con last month, I felt right at home seeing excited fans in costumes and a full day of programming events.

The Theo Rossi, Ryan Hurst and Kim Coates’ Tig Orgy – Plus Coates’ Tribute Tattoo and Will Opie Ever Patch Things Up with Jax? 21

Theo Rossi, Ryan Hurst and Kim Coates’ characters – Juice, Ryan and Tig – went through so much last season, leaving a myriad of unresolved issues that will have to be dealt with in the upcoming fifth season of Sons of Anarchy. Will things get better or worse for them with Jax Teller as the new SAMCRO president? We sat down with the actors during San Diego’s Comic Con to discuss how are things were playing out so far.

Comic-Con – Sons of Anarchy: As Jax Excels as SAMCRO’s President, is Charlie Hunnam Ready to Be a Blockbuster Star? 22

We caught up with Charlie Hunnam during the Sons of Anarchy press conference during San Diego’s Comic-Con. The number one question on most reporters’ minds was if Jax Teller is mentally and emotionally ready to be the next SAMCRO president in the show’s upcoming fifth season. And more importantly, what does Hunnam think about it?

Comic-Con - Kurt Sutter: The Expansion of the Sons of Anarchy Universe, Season Five and the Truth about John Teller’s Death 23

The last time I attended San Diego Comic-Con was two years ago. Sons of Anarchy was picking up steam but it wasn’t the worldwide hit it is today. I also recall Kurt Sutter discussing his dislike for crowds as if he dreaded having to go to Comic-Con. Flash forward to 2012: Sons of Anarchy is the most successful show in FX Network’s history and Sutter seemed almost –strong emphasis there– excited to be at Comic-Con.

Comic-Con 2012 – MAGGIE SIFF: Fans Will See a More Protective and Angrier Tara in Season Five

Maggie Siff’s character, Dr. Tara Knowles, will be the new queen of the SAMCRO universe when the upcoming season five of Sons of Anarchy premieres on September 11. The anticipation of how that is going to play out is high among the show’s fans. Armed with a long list of questions, I was determined to find out as much as possible during the show’s press conference at Comic-Con.

Apparently, Ron Perlman and Charlie Hunnam can’t get enough of working together. After filming FX’s hit drama Sons of Anarchy for the last five years, they also appear together in Jordan Robert’s small independent film Frankie Go Boom and in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim—one of the anticipated summer 2013 blockbusters.
