“I don’t even know what I’m doing here; I’m not even attracted to you.” – Gretchen

While You’re the Worst isn’t the most horrible series I’ve ever seen, I would venture to say it’s an acquired taste. I have a very odd sense of humor and while I like the “Pilot” episode, I wasn’t exactly laughing hysterically. I will say You’re the Worst is a departure from the types of comedies you expect to see on FX. We all know FX has pushed the boundaries with groundbreaking series like The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, The Americans, and even the often inappropriate animated series, Archer. FX’s other comedies, like The League and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, have sexually implied themes and at times, their language is a bit perverse. What FX does with You’re the Worst, however, is push sex right in your face straight out of the gate. It’s raunchy. I think there is maybe a two-minute lead that sets up how the two main characters, Jimmy (Chris Geere), an aspiring writer, and Gretchen (Aya Cash), a publicist in the music industry, meet and subsequently jump in the sack.

You’re the Worst is a ballsy move as far as comedies go for FX. After watching the screener of FX’s other new comedy series Married, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like You’re the Worst. Thankfully, there isn’t much time to be bored when Jimmy and Gretchen are constantly in the throes of ‘it’s one night stand sex and I’ll never see you again so let me spill my guts and tell you all the tawdry things I’ve done without the fear of being rejected’ passion. I will say there is a funny moment when Jimmy is at his ex-girlfriend’s wedding, using the disposable cameras to take some risqué photos of his privates.

Admittedly, Jimmy and Gretchen are made for each other. Jimmy is a narcissistic prick. Aside from his sort of sexy British accent and sometimes humorous dry wit, at the core, Jimmy is not really a likeable guy, although you can’t help but appreciate his honesty; it’s a catch 22 situation. But what the writers do is give us nuggets to Jimmy’s hidden humanity, especially when he meets his young neighbor Killian (Shane Francis Smith), whose father invents video games and offers some freebies to Jimmy. Somewhere, underneath the smoke infused, I’m better than you façade is an actual, decent human being who really does care about people. Just ask his roommate/personal chef/former college marijuana dealer/Iraq vet buddy Edgar (Desmin Borges). Edgar has his own issues to sort out but that’s another story altogether.

Edgar is sort of Jimmy's moral compass in human form, which may not be a good thing because he has his own demons to battle.

I like Gretchen but I also kind of want to shake the crap out of her to make her stop her self-destructive behavior. She has major issues with relationships, as does Jimmy, and she’s very forthcoming about…well, probably more than we actually need to know. We get it, we heard you the first time – you’re not good at relationships, blah, blah, blah.

There is a scene the writers created to show the stark contrast of what Gretchen’s sex life and love life is with “movie director guy” Ty (Stephen Schneider) versus what she has with Jimmy. Let’s just say the sex scenes with Jimmy are much more animated. Ty is just plain weird. Who says things like, “oh, you’re a marvel; that’s terrific; that’s de-li-cious,” when someone is giving you head? Just grunt in pleasurable moans like most men do. We don’t need the fancy words of encouragement, thanks.

If you’re a bit shy, be warned; there is a lot of sexual activity going on in the first 15 minutes of the episode. While there are no gratuitous shots of boobs or genitals (great camera maneuvering), the implied acts are pretty straightforward. The flipping and flopping, hair pulling, spitting (eww), and dropping to your knees action…you know exactly what the heck is going on.

You’re the Worst isn’t for everyone but if you’re a little twisted and like to watch the collision of two people who are train wrecks, then you should check it out. I think I’ll continue to watch just to see how demented these two get. I’m twisted like that.

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
