Review: Grimm, S2, Ep. 204 – “Quill”

There’s an outbreak of yellow fever infecting Wesens, the creatures Grimms hunt, and it is causing mayhem for Nick (David Giuntoli) and Hank (Russell Hornsby). Meanwhile, Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) gets bits and pieces of her memory back but nothing concrete about Nick. And Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner) take their relationship to the next level.
There were a few things going on in “Quill” that piqued my interest. One that’s an obvious stand-out is the yellow fever outbreak. It only infects Wesens, of all species, but it doesn’t seem to affect humans. This illness is strange and very random. How did a centuries old plague return to modern day society? Could this be a ploy from the ancient European Royal Families? Will this plague factor into more episodes in the near future?
We know Sean (Sasha Roiz) gets a call warning him about his family’s next move. “The families have sent another one. He departed Rome with a connection at JFK and should be in Portland soon. If he’s not there already.” What they sent is a Wesen known as a Nuckelavee. I don’t know what kind of creature it is but it looks menacing when it shifts from human form with its gaunt face with stringy hair. The families have sent this Nuckelavee for “the key.” The same small key Nick’s aunt gave to him before she died; the key that holds one of seven pieces of a map. Is it wrong that I want it be one of “nine pieces of eight?” Sorry for that Pirates of the Caribbean nod. I digress. I’m very eager for Sean’s brother Eric (James Frain) to become more visible in the episodes. Frain is just such a phenomenal actor and I know he’ll bring that diabolical devilry we need to the show. I want to know what kind of Wesen Sean is. And it didn’t go unnoticed that he asks Nick about Juliette. Is Sean trying to get on Nick’s good side so in the event Nick discovers Sean is a Wesen he won’t kill him?

Nick also shares more information with Hank about being a Grimm and how his ancestors have been hunting Wesens for centuries. I’m glad the secret is out, kind of, but I worry about Hank accidentally revealing his knowledge to someone who may not be so agreeable to his knowing. Monroe didn’t seem too thrilled but on the other hand, he doesn’t have to lie anymore. And with Rosalee infected with the yellow fever, Monroe is going to need all the help he can get to save her before she kills someone. I found it interesting how she became infected in the first place. The symptoms happen rapidly. Picture being on a lovely outdoor picnic, complete with antique picnic basket belonging to Monroe’s grandmother, to being attacked by a porcupine looking Wesen, and getting scratched as Rosalee and Monroe try to escape. Within the hour, she goes from calm and demure to randy vixen kissing and fawning all over Monroe. Then, of course, she turns rabid and tries to stab Nick. Hello, bi-polar on steroids!
Observations:
The cat that scratched Juliette and poisoned her clawed its way out of the kitty cage and goes on the attack. Luckily, Rosalee is quick enough to open the door and the cat runs out into the street. But why prolong her exposure to the disease when she could have gotten it then? Interesting… Now, while you hear screeching tires, it’s not known for sure that the cat was run over. Could it be on the loose, potentially infecting more people or other animals?

Poor Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee). He finally gets to go out into the field and ends up being attacked by the woman who is supposedly patient zero. Why does Wu always get the short end of the stick? Thankfully, he’s not eating random things anymore (paper clips, coins, and his carpet). But he’s clearly shaken after the encounter with the zombie-looking woman. I just don’t want Wu to start seeing Wesens like Hank does. I think that would be overkill.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode because of the fast-paced action of Nick and Hank trying to find infected persons, but it wasn’t as gripping as previous episodes. I am anxious to see Monroe and Rosalee’s relationship continue to blossom. I also want to know what will happen when Sean sees Juliette again. And why is Sean researching Nick’s mother’s obituary? What clue does he think he’ll find? Speaking of Kelly, I wonder where she is? Europe perhaps?
