To The Other Side... Review: The Vampire Diaries "Break on Through" 1

How does the player get played? Damon is off his game on this one.

An unstoppable and unseen force courses through the blood of a familiar face, causing him to wreak havoc on the small town of Mystic Falls. But what we don’t know is why now or how to stop it from continuing. Going back to the source of the witch spelled rings and the town of Mystic Falls might lead us to some answers. It’s only a guess on my part, but the angry spirit riding around on those rings might want to see justice done to a town whose leaders seem to be forgetting their purpose. I’m not buying the way this new menace is brought to light and I hope the writers revise their plan to plant a serial killer in the psyche of a formidable vampire hunter.

Observations and thoughts:

“Ah yes, back when you were in love and everything was all rainbows and unicorns.” Damon (Ian Somerhalder) might be a little more upset than he should about Elena (Nina Dobrev) turning his conversation concerning Alaric (Matthew Davis) into one about Stefan (Paul Wesley). Damon’s deluding himself if he thinks Elena would just forget about Stefan and fall head over heels for him. At this point, with all of the crap Stefan’s done, if Elena doesn’t hate him now, she never will. Which brings me to another point: Elena doesn’t deserve Damon. He’s changed so much since they met and has outdone Stefan in the morals department. Shouldn’t Damon be given some kind of break regarding his few mishaps? He’s repentant, wants forgiveness, but can’t seem to shake the ‘bad boy’ label he’s been given. Stefan’s always been the bad boy; Damon was the good one. What a turn of events, huh?

Maybe the good doctor isn't hiding anything. Do you think she's put her cards on the table?

Why should Stefan feel bad about drinking blood? Damon’s right about things in this respect. “Own it, live it, love it. Don’t be ashamed of who you are.” Vampires drink blood—human blood. To do otherwise would be denying who he is, and I think that’s part of Stefan’s problem. Once he embraces the vampire, becomes the vampire and lives life to its fullest, he might break out of his funk.

I’m still having difficulty trusting Dr. Fell (Torrey DeVitto). There’s something about her that rubs me the wrong way. With her in the picture (and Rick’s life), I thought she was replacing Jenna (Sara Canning). Now it seems she’s supposed to be the town’s saving grace, using vampire blood to heal those beyond healing in the emergency room.

I don’t like Rick being under some spell and going around killing people. It’s weird, off character and not necessary. These storylines are all over the place and I’m lost. Why is Rick’s ring cursed? Why hasn’t anyone noticed his crazy behavior until now? And why is it that every vampire in town is offering up their blood to anyone who’s close to death? This season is starting to fall apart and I’m not sure what more can be done to fix it.

Who knew the shallow teenage drama queen Caroline (Candice Accola) would grow to be a mature individual? All it took was her being turned into a vampire for her to be the defining voice in cases of pending disaster. I like the change in her and I applaud the writers for making her such a profound force in the lives of Elena, Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Matt (Zach Roerig).

To The Other Side... Review: The Vampire Diaries "Break on Through" 3

These two are slowly working their way back to one another. Predictable.

There is a small side plot relating to Rebekah (Clair Holt) finding the remaining white oak left in town. She succeeds in burning the bridge made from the stuff but you know that was too easy. The only interesting portion of this entire episode happens between Sage (guest star Cassidy Freeman) and Damon. I didn’t think vampires could have special powers, but she does. How intriguing to find out she can read minds and is able to pass the knowledge along through a kiss. Is she the only one with such an ability or are the others vamps hiding something from us? Sage is 900 years old but the Originals are much older. So why can’t they do anything special?

Funny lines:

Damon to Elena about Alaric: “Don’t worry about him. Take him out for chicken soup, get a martini, make sure he doesn’t kill anybody.”

**

Damon to Elena about making Stefan drink blood: “Because we’re vampires, Elena. We need human blood to survive; we’re predators, not puppies.”

**

Damon to Alaric: “Rick, the world can’t stop just because you’re an accidental psycho-killer.”

**

Sage to Damon about Rebekah: “God, I hate that elitist Original bitch.”

**

Most of “Break on Through” leaves me wanting—until the end. Things appear to be heating up and Damon and Stefan are leading the way to killing some Originals. It’s hilarious how our two favorite vampires are the new vampire hunters. Where’s Blade when you need him?
