This Isn’t the Dance. Review: The Tomorrow People – “Limbo”

Season 1, Episode 7 Air Date: Thursday, November 20, 2013, 9/8c on The CW. Rating: ★★★★★ “Our powers don’t make us good, they just make us powerful. How we use them is up to us.” – John The Tomorrow People takes a look at what it means to be between a rock and a hard place—not moving forward, not turning left or right, just waiting to see what happens. “Limbo” focuses on the status of a relationship, the truth of someone’s feelings, and a wicked jump shot? Observations and thoughts: I’m a bit surprised by “Limbo,” and not in a good way. The promos for the episode showcased a different Stephen (Robbie Amell). He appeared to be back in the game (literally), on top of the world, and behaving as most teens do. That isn’t really the case though. Stephen takes a walk on the wild side and ventures out of the range of his Tomorrow People (TP) credo. Not only does he use his powers to help humans, he is reckless and ends up being ‘grounded’ by his Uncle Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino). Not a very exciting development but interesting nonetheless. I’d like to say I enjoyed this view into the TP livelihood but it made me kind of sad. To know how helpless the TP are without their powers and how hopeless they are to the invisible tugs of connection they can’t help feeling, it leads me to wonder how any of the TP can be happy. How can the superhuman go back to being just human? No wonder Stephen feels like taking a step back from the madness. Thicker Than a Knife “What happened between us was a one time mistake. I’m with John.” Talk about tension in the room. Cara (Peyton List) and John (Luke Mitchell) reunite after the secret liaison between Cara and Stephen. I’ve been wondering how the two ‘lovebirds would interact with one another once the deception became known. There’s a new player in the game (love, people, I’m talking about love), and Cara is having some issues with what happened between her and Stephen. “What happened between us shouldn’t have happened. It was a mistake.” Regret is the greatest of all guilt trips. Cara is lying to herself and Stephen if she thinks there’s nothing more between them. While I’ve said I’m on the fence about these two getting together, and knowing it was bound to happen, I wasn’t expecting such disastrous results. I feel sorry for Stephen; he’ll end up with his feelings crushed over the “voice” in his head not turning out to be whom he thought she was—the girl of his dreams. You have to wonder how that whole thing works. You have a beautiful, taunting, seductive voice in your head, and vibes being shared through the psychic terminal that cannot be denied. What happens when you finally make that “connection” with the person behind the voice and they shut you down? Ouch! To Be or Not So let’s talk about the elephant in the room, shall we? Stephen has ‘been a very bad boy.’ I can’t believe the slip up he makes with Astrid (Madeleine Mantock), which, let’s be honest, I already knew. Don’t best friends always fall in love with one another? It’s all the rage in YA novels now, so I doubt it’ll stay out of TV shows geared toward teens. I hope the writers don’t make things weird between Astrid and Stephen. I love seeing the two together, and he needs someone human in his corner. She’s the only one who knows him and can keep him grounded. Crime Fighting Trio The breakout featured in “Limbo” reaches a new level of ick. Someone using their powers for their perversion is beyond sick. And the TP are out to even the score. This case hits home for Cara because of events that happened in her past. I wonder if she’s ever shared that with John considering how hard she is on him about keeping secrets. Pot meet kettle. Russell (Aaron Yoo) steps up to the plate, showing us he doesn’t always have to use his wisecracking antics to make a point. He can be obnoxious at times. I’d like to know how the TP will deal with breakouts that don’t conform to the code in the future. They are a band of kleptos, liars, and who knows what else. Who’s to judge what crime is unforgiving? Random thoughts: The TP live and thrive underground, and apparently, so do their laptops. I love the new Ultra agent, Perkins (Anthony Konechny). He looks like competition for Stephen and it might not be a bad thing for him. How long do you think John will be pissed at Stephen? I think his reaction to the news is chivalrous, in a cave man kind of way. Who would win in a fair fight though? Funny lines: Russell: “Oh, ‘cause I’m Asian I must play the violin?” Cara: “Piano?” Russell: “Unh, real good at math too.” ** Russell to Cara and John: “We should split up, so I don’t have to listen to you two bicker anymore.” ** I must bring attention to some of the scenes that were subpar. The Tomorrow People always does a great job with its special effects, so to see the obvious punches being thrown is a bit disappointing. Not only that, I can’t figure out how the humans in plain sight of Stephen and John’s antics are oblivious to the telekinesis at use. Maybe they have a bit of “my mind is playing tricks on me” going on. I’m not buying it though. I know this could have been done better. We’re seven episodes in and I’d hate to see things begin to slide downhill. Here’s to hoping next week’s episode of The Tomorrow People will be better.
