THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

Season 5, Episode 1

Air Date: Thursday, October 3, 2013 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“I’ll figure all this out.” – Damon Salvatore

Boy, isn’t there a lot to deal with going into this new season of The Vampire Diaries (TVD)? It seems one Salvatore brother is cleaning up a ton of messes while the other makes them. And how about that intro to “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Matt (Zach Roerig) and Rebekah (Claire Holt)? Hello, this is on at 8pm folks! Let’s keep the ménage a trois to a minimum, shall we?

Observations and thoughts:

I almost forgot Katherine (Nina Dobrev) is human now. Did anyone else forget this little tidbit? No wonder she’s acting and looking so unlike herself. This makes me wonder how she survived so long. Everything she did in her lifetime must have consisted of her compelling others to do her bidding. She must be bereft without her vamp abilities. I don’t like it. I want the old Katherine back. This tame, scared of her shadow Katherine isn’t chiming too well with me. She’s still the same crude, out for herself woman, but she’s lost that special spark.

Super happy fun time! How about some realism?

Well, it sure doesn’t take long for everyone to discover the secret I was sure would last at least half the season. Is it that Stefan/Silas (Paul Wesley) couldn’t pass because those closest to him know him that well? I love Wesley in this role. He seems to have stepped into his own with this bad guy version of the broodiest vampire in all the land. He’s plain evil, in fact. I hope the writers keep this up for quite some time. It’ll make the show more interesting and give TVD the oomph it needs. I have to say this, in regards to Stefan’s current predicament, he’s a vampire; he doesn’t need to breathe. Why is he in a constant state of drowning? This disturbs me more than I can say.

And I’m sorry but dorm rooms are not that damn big. You could through a house party in Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena’s (Dobrev) room. What college is this again? I hope the writers realize we cannot be fooled by the shenanigans Caroline and Elena go through as true college experiences. Most of their time is spent in their dorm. Um … no. How boring can these two be without having the guys around? Is this what we’re going to expect now that they’re no longer in Mystic Falls? Epic fail!

Jeremy (Stephen R. McQueen) is one of the saving graces this season. I’m so happy to see he’s back, alive, and in the flesh. Not like ghost Bonnie (Kat Graham). I think it’s a shame to waste Graham’s talents with a few quick flashes on screen. Considering Bonnie’s only visible to one person—Jeremy—what fun is that? It’s a big tease if you ask me. Of course, their feelings for each other will grow and then what? They can’t be together. It’s a ridiculous case of star-crossed lovers and it’s not fair. Because if Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline can’t be together, no one else should get their happily-ever-after either, huh?

Who's the baddest Hunter in town? Oh yeah. The youngest Gilbert.

I figured Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) appearances would become few and far between, but damn. Trevino is limited to voice overs now? I wonder who he pissed off.

“I love you, Damon.” Is it just me or does anyone else wonder why Damon (Ian Somerhalder) doesn’t say it back to Elena? He says, “Good night,” and leaves it at that. Is his guilt for not keeping Jeremy out of trouble overwhelming him? Does he feel he doesn’t deserve her love because of recent events? I love how Damon has to be the one to fix everything but I hope he realizes everything isn’t in his control. He has to let some things go and focus on what he can handle without going off the rails. I think Silas being in town is going to haunt him. He’ll take it as his personal mission to rid the town of Silas and locating his brother. I say give Damon his cape, put an “S” on his chest and call him what he is. Super (Sexy) Vamp!

Funny lines:

Katherine to Damon about her human weaknesses: “I’m weak and I’m slow. Do you have any idea what it’s like to run in heels? I have blisters.”

**

Damon to Silas: “God you’re slow. Guess vamp speed came with the upgrade.”

**

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” was an OK premiere. I’d love for there to have been more of a delay in Silas’ reveal than there was. I mean, wasn’t that supposed to be the crux of the season? How long would it take everyone to figure out Stefan isn’t really Stefan? I guess I’ll go along and wait to see how this all plays out. I’m not holding my breath though.
