Review: True Blood “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” So Will It Be Bill or Russell?

Air Date: Sunday, August 5, 2012, 9/8C on HBO

RATING:

“If you think they’re going to buy this act much longer, you’re as crazy as they are.” – Eric Northman

It is with regret I inform you dear reader, my interest was lost about halfway through “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” I can’t say I saw what was coming; I can’t say I knew what made sense or not. What I will say is I’m deeply disappointed with the way things have been skewed. Previously, I felt there was some point to the season and now that direction has been lost. The actions of some of the characters have been quite predictable, but the acting is horrendous. I can’t get over how badly acted some of the scenes were with the werewolves, the “Obamas” (which in itself is an insult in more ways than one), and the solitary dreamscape of a confused and lonely vampire. I spent at least 20 minutes looking at clothes online. I’ve never done that during an episode of True Blood. Ever. So, what can we expect from the future of this show? As my friend Tori says, “I’m all out of fucks to give.” My sentiments exactly.

Observations:

Did Eric really think Bill would side with him? I bet Nora will be pissed when she wakes up.

“You’re more of a mainstreamer than I’ll ever be.” Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) corners Bill (Stephen Moyer) and puts his back against the wall with this statement. I had a feeling Bill was playing at something, but what’s his endgame? He’s come up with the idea to diminish the vampires True Blood supply, so why is he still acting? Or is he? What has gone so wrong in his life that he has to throw in with the lunatics and go along with their cockamamie plans? “I am lost. I don’t know who to trust,” Bill says. Hmm… never would have taken him for a lonesome, lonely loner.

“I ain’t Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost, although I am way prettier.” Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) once again steals the show. Not only is he charging “bitches” for his services, he has no clue how to do what he does. It’s too funny watching him try to conjure a spirit only to be shocked when one actually speaks to him. “I ain’t Gmail for dead bitches! Send your own goddamn messages. Hell.” As an aside: How ominous is it that Gran is reaching out to Sookie (Anna Paquin) from beyond the grave? What’s really bad is the thing Gran sent her looking for wasn’t what I thought it would be. My hopes were quickly dashed when I realized Sookie wouldn’t find the link to her Faery relatives. Oh well… I love that Lafayette’s reverted back to his former sassiness. He’s no longer the crying, crazy haired, fraidy cat he was last season. He’s got his groove back and is making sure he’s not taken advantage of, by anyone. Lafayette deserves a break from all the drama. He’s lost his love, his mind, and his way. Now, he’s on top of his game and dealing with his newfound ‘gift.’

Lafayette is the only thing keeping me interested anymore. And his pretty eyelashes.

Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Tara (Rutina Wesley) definitely have an interesting maker/child relationship. I like that Tara stands up to Pam though. Tara isn’t quick to back down and doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind or ask questions. At least she still has that part of her personality. Now if this baby vamp can figure things out without knowing all the details of the Authority’s plan, how long will it take other vampires around the world to declare the buffet is open and it’s all you can eat? I’ll be honest, I kind of like this turn of events. It means we’ll get some kind of action and that the writers have something more in store. Granted it might not lead to anything outlandish, there’s the possibility something good will come of the war between humans and vampires. What that will be, I don’t know. Oh, and what in the world is Russell (Denis O’Hare) doing with the wolves? Building an army, I think…

Funny lines:

Sookie: “You see anything?”

Lafayette: “Yup, one fine ass looking muthafucka with pretty new eyelashes.”

**

Pam: “Just because we drank a bitch together does not make us Oprah and Gail.”

Tara: “Suck me, Vampire Barbie.”

Another one bites the dust. You really didn’t think Scott Foley was going to become a regular, did you? What a waste of talent.

The liberties taken by the writers in True Blood illustrate just how off the mark the show has become. I won’t say all the deviations haven’t been interesting, because some of them have, but I wonder what this season would have looked like had Eric and Sookie spent more time figuring out the dynamic of their relationship. The change in Bill is remarkable and kind of out of left field. I always knew he had a motive for his wild actions, but he’s gone off on a tangent he won’t soon be able to come back from. When it comes to the southern gentleman and the Viking and their place in Sookie’s life, I’ll always side with the Viking. Let’s hope the writers make all this ‘I love you both so I can’t be with either of you’ B.S. worth our while.
