Review: The Walking Dead "Triggerfinger" (Lori is Stirring Up Trouble... Shane Better Watch Out) 1

Lori is nothing but trouble and one day she'll get herself killed.

What a terrifying opening scene, but I kind of think Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) is getting the wake-up call she needs. Plus, there’s the added bonus of suspense during the first two minutes of “Triggerfinger” as we find Lori in a life or death situation. I know there won’t be anyone rushing to her rescue, she might not be able to defend herself with her injuries, and her stupidity could lead to her death. There’s a wake-up call if I ever saw one.

Observations and thoughts:

The wordless agreement between Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Glenn (Steven Yeung), and Hershel (Scott Wilson) makes me wonder just what will these survivors have to go through as each day slowly ticks by. Hershel isn’t a man who likes guns so you know he can’t be too comfortable with Rick taking the law into his hands, but you also have to wonder if Rick’s actions make Hershel fear for his safety. Or does Hershel believe it’s beneficial having Rick around now that he knows what he’s capable of?

The standoff in town is absolute edge-of-your-seat goodness. Three men in the bar, three men on the street; words will not be enough to settle the score. The bullets fly, Walkers show up—you know it’s going to be nothing but heart racing suspense.

I didn't think Hershel would be such a good shot. Guess we don't know everything about him either.

Daryl (Norman Reedus) is a lost cause. “You’re afraid; you’re out here all alone…” Although he’s yelling harsh words at Carol (Melissa McBride), you know he’s really talking about himself. He’s riding some guilt trip or is still reeling from the talk he had with his hallucinated brother Merle (Michael Rooker) a few episodes back. Although, I think I understand his reluctance to be with the group. He’s always been a loner and up until now, he hasn’t had to care about anyone outside of his only family. With his brother missing (presumed dead) and his failure at finding Sophia (Madison Lintz), he’s left feeling like a loser or perhaps an idiot.

What do you do in such a crazy situation? Leave someone to die by bleeding to death or being eaten? Rick is definitely taking his leadership role seriously. Not only does he not want to leave a kid to die, he makes a split decision to save his life. I can say for certain The Walking Dead doesn’t skimp when it comes to throwing you for a loop. Walkers are coming out of the woodwork like scattering cockroaches and I’m feeling pulled into the moment the same as Rick, Hershel and Glenn. Leaving someone behind to die—even if he was just shooting at you—truly isn’t an option in a world riddled with zombies but man, I was thinking his ass would be toast if it were up to me.

Rick is coming into his own. He'll be someone to contend with Shane.

I know Shane (Jon Bernthal) gets a bum rap but he’s misunderstood. He, too, is trying to stay alive and keep those he loves (Lori and his maybe baby) out of harm’s way. He’s a liar, a misfit, and a danger to others, but he comes through when he needs to. Albeit, he does things in a way most people wouldn’t, I think he doesn’t know how else to be. If you look at things from his perspective—he thought his best friend was dead, fell into a relationship with said best friend’s wife, and had leadership over a small group of survivors during the apocalypse—all the things he had fell away from him and he was left with nothing but ‘hey man, thanks for watching over my wife and kid.’ I think I’d be in a pissy mood too.

“Triggerfinger” brings a lot of insight to the group as a whole. Glenn is down on himself for being so self-absorbed, but is that a bad thing? Darryl is pulling away from the group but Carol is determined to keep him from straying too far. Shane is going off the deep end and trying to take Lori with him. I don’t like what Lori is trying to pull with telling Rick Shane is a danger. Rick has a heart, compassion, and know-how. He doesn’t need to be turned into a cold-blooded killer just to make a few others feel safe. But what should be done about Shane?
