Review: The Walking Dead "18 Miles Out" 1

Being leader isn't all it's cracked up to be for Rick.

This week we dive right into the midst of a zombie swarm. Walkers converge on a few of the survivors and there’s nowhere for them to go. I’m wondering where they are, when it is and what the hell they’ve gotten themselves into this time. But isn’t that the crux of the situation? There are always Walkers, danger, and never a good place to run to for safety. The farmhouse may seem like the ideal sanctum to live out their existence but it can’t be their saving grace forever. Where do you go when there’s no place to go?

Observations and thoughts:

The talk between Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Shane (Jon Bernthal) is pretty hardcore. You don’t expect Rick to get in Shane’s face, but Rick stands his ground and doesn’t back off. I love him even more for it. But you have to know Shane is just not simply going to take Rick’s words lying down. Shane’s a bit on the crazy side and thinks he’s right. “I didn’t keep Lori and Carl alive, man… they kept me alive.” I have a soft spot for Shane because he is misunderstood. Although, he needs to be brought back from the place he’s gone to, quickly.

Shane mentions not seeing any bites on the two Walkers he and Rick kill away from camp. What does that mean exactly? I’ve always thought the blood they got on them from killing Walkers would be contaminated, but no one manages to become infected. I think there’s something there because a bite or scratch can spread the zombie virus, but not blood?

What was running through Shane's mind being trapped on that bus?

The gore just keeps on coming. I have to turn away from the screen during the zombie killing. The blood and the Walkers themselves are so realistic sometimes… just another reason why The Walking Dead is such a great show. They keep it real.

Andrea (Lori Holden) really goes off on Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and I want to applaud after her speech. I hadn’t looked at things Andrea’s way though. Lori does seem to be living the good life: “… husband, son, baby, boyfriend.” Things can be misconstrued to appear as if Lori keeps coming out on top while everyone else suffers one loss after another. And I gotta tell you, I’m in total agreement with Andrea. Lori has taken on a leadership role over the women. When did that happen?

I think the odd man out, Randall (Michael Zegen), may stick around for a while. Yes, Rick needs to decide whether he should kill him or let him walk because Randall is a potential hazard to the group, but I don’t think Rick can make such a massive decision. In my opinion, Randall will be assimilated into the clan and he’ll live as the others do—probably picking cucumbers or something. There are too many people around who won’t do something about a potential senseless murder. Although the group doesn’t know what Randall might do—or is capable of—they have to at least assume he won’t make it back to his friends. Hello, there are Walkers everywhere! And even if he does, the survivors could be ready for any attack. Andrea keeps lookout with Dale (Jeffrey Demunn), so how could they be ambushed? Speaking of Dale, I know he’ll have plenty to say about keeping Randall captive. He’s always the voice of reason.

Memorable Lines:

Rick to Shane: “There are no rules, man; you’re lost.”

**

Andrea to Lori: “Everything falls apart and you’re in my face over missing some laundry?”

**

Beth to Maggie: “What are we waiting for? … No one can protect us.”

**

Rick to Shane: “You wanna kill me, you’re probably gonna have to do better than a wrench.”

Review: The Walking Dead "18 Miles Out" 3

I didn't think Rick was going to make it. Walker Rick would not be welcome at the farm.

On a one-to-ten scale, the suspense in “18 Miles Out” is at a 15. I thought for sure Rick was meeting his end, not to mention Shane finding himself trapped by Walkers with no way out. Talk about being on the edge of your seat! Rick says to Shane, “It’s time for you to come back.” My sentiments exactly. But then again, I’m still waiting for Merle (Michael Rooker) to show up.
