Review: The Killing, Season 1, Ep. 7 "Vengeance" 1

What is it that Linden sees that we don't?

More rain. The rain in this episode seems ominous—as if it is trying to wash away any wrongdoing to make one appear clean. What needs to be clean is the conscience of a few people: the murderer, Bennet Ahmed (Brandon Jay McLaren) and Stan Larsen (Brent Sexton). It seems too easy to point the finger at Mr. Ahmed, but it’s possible he knows more than he’s letting on. Or maybe Amber Ahmed (Ashley Johnson) is the person the police should be looking at. I have a sinking suspicion she’s not really pregnant. I know that may be a stretch, but anything is a possibility. What if the neighbor who saw two people carrying a body away from the Ahmed residence did see Amber with this mystery friend of Bennet’s? I’m probably reaching here (because I’ve watched too much daytime TV) but I’m keeping an open mind and looking at all prospects. Couldn’t it be possible that a woman is made to appear pregnant to throw off our scent? From the beginning, no one has been what they seemed to be. Then there is Terry Marek (Jamie Anne Allman). She’s Rosie’s aunt and always around, but she seems deeply troubled.

Linden and Holder following a tip which leads them to a mystery room

We see Linden (Mirielle Enos) make an effort to catch her flight but of course, she misses it. Did you think she’d leave? I didn’t. I’m not expecting her to make her wedding, and I’m not expecting her to leave Seattle until she finds Rosie’s (Katie Findlay) killer. “Hey Linden, you got your commitment issues, that’s fine. But don’t be using them to mess up my career.” Maybe Holder has a point. Linden is committed to the job though, even if she doesn’t seem as committed to her fiancé. Plus, I don’t think she wants to leave anything in Holder’s (Joel Kinnaman) hands if she doesn’t have to. A little foreshadowing maybe? I think she would feel bad about leaving the Larsen case behind for someone else to wrap up. I don’t think Linden’s a perfectionist, but she has a method in which she operates during her investigations, making her need to see this case through to the end. There’s no other way for her. And while Holder seems to be holding his own, he’s just not Linden.

I think I’m losing interest in Councilman Richmond (Billy Campbell) and his ambiguous part in the Rosie Larsen murder. The motive for his involvement is lost on me. A campaign car is the only thing, so far, that links him to the case. Yes, Mr. Ahmed is part of a program endorsed by Richmond, but what else is there? Richmond is a scapegoat, in my opinion. Now is the time to find out why. My money is on his opponent. The mayor, Lesley Adams (Tom Butler), is trying his hardest to put Richmond out of the running and it’s going beyond political and into the personal realm.

Linden and Holder at the mosque in search of "Mohammed"

This episode uses the race card in a way which shocks me. I’m not sure how things got turned around like they have, but my goodness… Is a teacher’s religion really important in this instance? He hasn’t been arrested, charged or found guilty of anything and now it’s a free-for-all on his faith? And what about Mitch’s (Michelle Forbes) mother and her bigoted rant? Maybe the point is you never know what a person really thinks until they get pissed off enough to tell you. What I do like is the short but effective scene where a girl who’s been missing is brought to the attention of Linden and Holder. Oftentimes, young girls who aren’t Caucasian aren’t big time news. Their faces aren’t splattered across television screens when they go missing or are found murdered. Does this mean their lives aren’t worth as much or are they just not 11o’clock newsworthy? Leave it to The Killing to be as gritty and real as possible when doing something so groundbreaking.

This episode is entitled “Vengeance.” Any idea who’s seeking it or whether they have achieved it? I think it’s the beginning of the search for vengeance and Mitch will be the one exacting it.

OMG! I was thinking something about the pregnant wife – that condition she was telling Linden about…I mean, how easy would it be to check on that fact? I also have a suspicion about Stan’s business partner – forgot his name – he seems a little too involved. I also had suspicions about the sister, Terry as well. This show is so full of twists, it’s like a great mystery novel…just when you think you know…you don’t. And I do NOT like Richmond’s girlfriend AT ALL. She’s got another agenda besides getting Richmond elected Mayor. Great Show!! Great Review too!!

    1. Thank you, my personal cheerleader! Belko is Stan’s partner or whatever he is. He kind of gives me the creeps. He is around too much and always wants to help. Terry is just fishy. The last episode, I think, we finally see her reacting to someone strangely, then she goes home and cries. Not sure what that had to do with anything but I hope the show gets back to it. I’m always looking at the people who don’t get as much screen time. They tend to be the guilty ones.
