Reviewer Rating: 4 Stars

If you have been impatiently waiting (like me) on the second half of the new Unsolved Mysteries episodes to be released, the wait is over! Six brand new episodes were released on Monday, October 19, 2020 on Netflix (listed as Volume 2). If you thought the first six episodes took you on an emotional journey, grab your tissues and stress balls, because these new episodes will put you through the gambit.

If you read my review of the first half of the new Unsolved Mysteries (read here), then you will know I love a good mystery, especially anything supernatural and paranormal. While the new episodes provide at least one supernatural themed mystery, I became enthralled with the other five episodes ranging from a high-profile murder conundrum involving a decorated veteran turned White House aide to a death-row inmate who escaped when after getting a furlough to go Christmas shopping. What?! Let’s just say my emotional range got a real workout with these new entries.

Washington Insider Murder – the highly publicized death and murder of former White House aide and military veteran John P. Wheeler III (aka Jack Wheeler) has intrigue, mysterious circumstances, and all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster. Wheeler’s contributions to Vietnam veterans is inspiring but it’s Wheeler’s own personal obstacles that he had to overcome that truly provides a twist to this unsolved crime.

Unsolved Mysteries Vol. 2 - Death in Oslo - Netflix

A Death in Oslo – this story truly made my brain spin. It’s filled with the makings of an international spy thriller. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction and, in this case, a Jane Doe in Oslo, Norway is a prime example of such. How did she check in to a luxury hotel with no identification or form of payment to secure a room? Is her death truly a suicide or was she murdered by a skilled professional? Her identity is still unknown after nearly three decades. Is this a cover up, conspiracy, or hired hit? These are all the things that ran through my mind as I watched this story unfold. This story is also an homage to real honest investigative journalism.

A Death Row Fugitive – this case alone put me through an emotional roller coaster. The heinous crime against a young girl; the callous, almost arrogant attitude of the man who confessed to the crime and his audacity; the romanticized notions of a death-row inmate with a real talent for painting making him seem less threatening; and the anguish and disgust you can hear in the voices of the law enforcement officials trying to track down this escaped prisoner. Yes; a death-row inmate escaped after being given a furlough to go Christmas shopping. What in the actual hell? How did a convicted murderer get an opportunity to leave the prison unattended? I can’t. (Where’s my stress ball?!)

Tsunami Spirits – In March 2011, after a devasting Tsunami hit Japan, a small coastal community begins to experience some paranormal phenomenon. Residents claiming to have encounters with ghosts of those who perished in the Tsunami. This story sent chills down my spine. Listening to the tragic accounts of how some of these people found their loved ones after the waters receded is heart wrenching. There are some stories of these spirit encounters that provided comfort, even allowing the survivors to move on. And some stories are simply haunting. I won’t spoil any details because this is one story that must be watched to fully grasp the full range of the various types of interactions the survivors had with the ghosts of their family, friends, and loved ones who perished.

Lady in the Lake – On a dark and cold winter night in Michigan is how this story begins. When a divorced mother of three adult children doesn’t return home from church one evening, the clues lead down a peculiar path. When the police investigation presents a possible suicide by drowning, the eldest daughter knows it doesn’t fit the bill. The family history begins to rear its ugly head, and with family members holding long grudges, who needs enemies, right?

Unsolved Mysteries Vol. 2 - Stolen Kids - Netflix

Stolen Kids – This story is heart breaking and brings back a lot of memories of the children taken (and murdered) in Atlanta, GA in 1979-1980. In Harlem, NY during the spring and summer of 1989, two young African American children were taken from a local playground. The police investigate every possible lead, and there were very little to be had, with no results. These two boys just simply disappeared. Stolen so young, possibly to be sold on the black market, could these two boys still be alive today? The stories of both the mothers also strike a heart wrenching cord.

As I mentioned in my review of the first six episodes, I’ve been a fan of Unsolved Mysteries since the beginning. I admit that re-watching some of the older episodes after the new series launched, listening as the host, the late Robert Stack, would narrate the story details, highlighting certain clues, and emphasizing key facts, I missed that extra added dramatic effect.

In fairness to the new series, these current stories don’t necessarily need anyone to provide any type of narration of the traumatic events that are being unfolded again after such a long period of time.

If you haven’t watched this revitalized series yet, and are a fan of true crime, this is a series for you. And you may be able to help solve one of the cases.

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
