Resident Alien, Season 1, Episode 6 “Sexy Beast”

“Now I understand ‘douche bag’.” – Harry
The opening sequence of “Sexy Beast” involves a young girl (Alix West Lefler) and her father (Michael Adamthwaite), a lighthouse keeper, on a stormy night. With thunder and lightning cracking, the power goes out. As they climb the lighthouse tower, the little girl notices that the rain stopped suddenly. But it’s not because the storm is over, there is a huge UFO hovering over the lighthouse. The little girl begins taking photos with her instant Polaroid type camera.
Throughout this season of Resident Alien, the search for a permanent replacement for the late Dr. Sam Hodges (Jan Bos) has been in play. Currently, Harry (Alan Tudyk) is acting town doctor while Mayor Ben Hawthorne (Levi Fiehler) sought out a more amiable physician to take over. Well, the new doctor has arrived – Dr. Ethan Stone (Michael Cassidy) aka “Dr. Ethan” – and according to Nurse Ella (Diana Bang), he’s a looker.
Most of “Sexy Beast” consists of Harry being jealous of Dr. Ethan, flexing his superiority whenever he can, and trying to put pieces of his spaceship back together again. Also drugging his wife Isabelle (Elvy) so he can leave and work on his ship. Then the “coffee pods” and finding out who “the General” is. Huge guest star in this one!
Nurse Ella has been in a few episodes, always ready to offer up mispronunciations and snarky repartee. She tells Asta (Sara Tomko) [pronounced Ah-sta not ASS-ta], “I saw the new doctor and he is gorgeous…doesn’t hurt to have something nice to look at for once.” As she walks out of the room, she gives Harry that up and down, side-eye glance to which Harry feels offended.
“What the hell? Something nice to look at? As far as humans go, I’m handsome; I’m even, what’s the modern word for it – ravishing.”
Harry uses wine and drugs to knock Isabelle out so he can work quietly and uninterrupted on his ship. As he works on piecing things together, he thinks to himself, “They have a term on Earth for a man who works on machines – sexy beast. That’s me. If these humans ever saw me actually flying my spaceship, I’d have women beating me off with a stick.” Well, close enough, right. I’m sure he meant…well, you know.
Ben introduces Dr. Ethan around to everyone, including Sheriff Mike Thompson (Corey Reynolds) and Deputy Liv Baker (Elizabeth Bowen). Of course, Sheriff Mike has to flex, “People call me Big Black,” which makes Ben cringe a bit, but Dr. Ethan doesn’t miss a beat, “Cool; nice to meet you Big Black.”
There is a whole conversation about coffee makers, coffee pods, it’s absolutely hilarious and it fits in nicely with the quirkiness of the show. Liv wants to get a “Nespresso” machine, but Sheriff Mike isn’t having it. “Hell nah, those things freak me out. I mean, think about, a whole cup of coffee in that tiny little pod. Shit, that’s gotta be the Devil’s work.”
Then Ben suggests the pods as well. Liv says, “Seems like everyone likes those pods.” But Sheriff Mike isn’t having any of it, “We ain’t getting them creepy ass pods, alright. Why don’t you just take a damn Ouija board into a cemetery.” Damn. What happened with Sheriff Mike and coffee pods?
Back to Harry. He’s jealous of Dr. Ethan. It’s so damn funny how he tries to flex proclaiming he’s smarter and better than Dr. Ethan. He even (accidentally on purpose) dislocates Dr. Ethan’s shoulder in an arm-wrestling match. “His smile makes me want to love him and strangle him.” Then D’Arcy (Alice Wetterlund) starts paying attention to the new guy and, even though he isn’t interested in her, Harry gets a bit envious. Fast forward to the next day and D’Arcy is taking breakfast to go from Dr. Ethan’s place. Ok, who does a breakfast spread like that on a weekday? [Honestly, I’d probably would have taken the plate too. Quiche!]
There’s something afoot with the new physician…I’m not buying his “Doctors Without Borders” goody-goody schtick. Call me suspicious but I feel like if he’s this highly experienced M.D., why the heck would he want to come to a small town and be the local doctor? I’m then reminded of what Harry said at the beginning of the “Pilot” episode – “Nobody in their right mind would live in place like this unless they have something to hide.” What’s Dr. Ethan hiding or is he hiding from someone?
The investigation into Sam’s death gets a little more complicated when Asta reveals a few more details she may have neglected to mention. She tells Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv that Sam was a diabetic, about the stolen prescription pad and the drugs begin circulated by teens at a party. The interviews at the local high school are some truly entertaining scenes. The difference between Sheriff Mike’s tactics versus Deputy Liv’s are quite…let’s just say Mike could learn a thing or two from Liv.
Back at the station, it seems Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv have two separate murder boards. I’ve said it before, Liv is astute and shouldn’t be underestimated as a Deputy. She’s practically got this murder solved. “Insulin is the method of delivery” for the “botulinum toxin” found in the toxicology report. Interesting.
A flash back scene to four months ago in a conference room filled with military personnel. The mysterious guy from previous episodes is Lt. David Logan (Alex Barima) who discusses the strange anomaly in the sky could be a UFO. Then the camera pans to a voice, the General speaks…it’s Linda (frickin’) Hamilton! The Terminator queen herself is guest starring in Resident Alien as the General. She enlists Lt. Logan to help her find the UFO in a top-secret, “off the books” mission.
And his partner is the not so pleasant (kind of scary) Lisa (Mandell Maughan) who doesn’t seem to have issues with killing people that get in her way. R.I.P. Cowboy Roy (Brent Stait).
The General holds an old photo in her hands as she gazes upon a spaceship in a military hangar. It seems she’s been looking for “little green men” for a very long time.
As Harry continues searching the mountains for more of his ship, he finds a crucial piece just as D’Arcy and the mountain crew’s helicopter flies in. It’s dangerous on the mountain due to the crevasses on the glacier.
Harry then takes the piece and drives out to New Mexico where he left his ship cloaked. But when he arrives, his ship is gone. There are snipers around waiting for someone or something to show up looking for the ship. Harry senses something awry but before he can do anything, a black sedan rolls up fast, hitting the brakes just before hitting Harry. Dun-dun-dun… what a way to end the episode!
