Not So a-MUSE-ing. Review: Grimm – “Kiss of the Muse”

Nick tries to protect a woman being attacked by her jealous boyfriend…little does he know

Talk about fizzling out. After seeing the promos for this episode, I was anxious to see Nick (David Giuntoli) get into some trouble because the whole Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) not talking to him storyline was becoming cumbersome. While “Kiss of the Muse” does tie up some loose ends, it lacks in excitement and allure. I will say I love the introduction of increasingly more exotic Wesen creatures. The Musai is quite intriguing, even having some links to the famed artist Van Gogh and possibly the reason he lopped off his ear.

Missing from all the action, or lack thereof, is Hank (Russell Hornsby), who returns this week on crutches. Apparently, he’s been on vacation in Maui with his ex-wife Nadine (not seen). I can’t tell if he’s lying about how he sustained his injury or if he and Nadine did a round of Boudoir Olympics; either way, I’m glad he’s back. Hank provides the human anchor to Nick’s supernatural Grimm side. Their friendship helps keep Nick rooted in reality instead of being completely consumed by all the Grimm business he must attend to.

Observations:

More of Juliette’s memories surface and she seems ready to share with Nick. Finally. I know dragging out a story line makes for compelling television (sometimes) but these two haven’t been in the same room or even the same zip code for ages. As much as I like the mystery surrounding Juliette’s decision whether to accept Nick’s life as a Grimm, I was anxious for Nick to hook up with with Chloe (guest star Nora Zehtner), the ‘come hither’ Musai.

After all this time, patiently waiting for Juliette to go to Nick…they don’t even kiss?

The Musai is an interesting Wesen. Her kiss and “pernicious influence” cannot be cured with any potion. As Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) reads from one of the Grimm journals, “The kiss of the Musai is as euphoric and addictive as any narcotic known to man and once begun, the relationship always ends in madness and destruction and death.” Nice. So with no cure and Nick rapidly unraveling under Chloe’s intoxicating advances, Rosalee (Bree Turner) suggests something that is key to any good fairy tale –to break the curse, so to speak, you need true love’s kiss. Unfortunately, even after months of being apart, Juliette and Nick’s unusual reunion comes without a passionate kiss inside the holding cell area of the precinct. Ooh, so romantic…I’m swooning over here (not).

Monroe, I’d love to share your “veggie steaks” with you. I’m a carnivore but you’re such a great guy, I’ll take one for the team; veggie steak, that is. What a true friend he is. Not only is he letting Nick stay with him, Monroe cooks and tries to be there for Nick through all of this. Unfortunately, it’s poor timing for Monroe right now with Nick so bedazzled by the sparkly elfish Musai. That little tiff he and Nick have will be forgotten…right? I hate to see their friendship tainted over something as trivial as a woman…er, Musai.

We need more WU!

Why isn’t Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee) showcased more often? He’s one of my favorite humans on Grimm. He is clever, sharp, and needs more screen time. I love his enthralling description of Anton’s (Brian Gant) art, Chloe’s current obsessive boyfriend: “Interestingly, his style seems to range from impressionistic to WTF.” Lovely. I’ve been looking for some WTF art to adorn my vacant walls. Writers, give Wu more meaningful screen time…STAT!

Captain Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz), oh you Hexenbiest, you. I adore the way you threaten Chloe. There isn’t room in Portland for a Musai to be fudging around with your precious Grimm, especially with an impending visit from your dear half-brother Eric (guest star James Frain). Again, writers, enough with the teasing. We need a reunion. What? Are you holding out until the last episode of the season? Perhaps you’re saving all the good bits for the season finale because they sure were sparse in this episode.

Rosalee gets an impromptu tour of the late Aunt Marie’s trailer. After all she’s done for Nick, it’s about time she gets a peek inside. Granted, it’s without Nick’s knowledge, but it’s to benefit him and his current dilemma. And besides, if Juliette, who doesn’t even fully remember Nick or what he’s told her about being Grimm or that he is a Grimm, can go to the trailer alone, it’s good that Rosalee finally gets a turn too. It’s endearing to see how in awe she is of all the history of both Wesens and Grimms alike stored in the trailer. Just ignore the weapons used to behead and impale Wesens.

In the previews for the final two episodes of season two, there seems to be a plethora of goodies in store for us, including Juliette finally seeing Rosalee as a Fuchsbau. And then there are the zombies. I’m just starting to get into The Walking Dead after swearing off zombies since 1986 and now they’re invading my beloved Grimm. Hopefully, we’re in for a spectacular season finale.
