The Originals Season 1 PosterSeason 1, Episode 10

Air Date: Thursday, January  14, 2014, 8/7c on The CW.

RATING:

“And I should keep listening to you because?” – Hayley

I’ve been waiting and waiting for the return of The Originals. I was beyond excited to watch “The Casket Girls” and get into some of the debauchery being shown in the previews for the new episode. “The Casket Girls” is all about girl power in the form of three powerful women making their stand and not taking shit from any man. But will they succeed?

Observations and thoughts:

Girl Power

Nothing will keep this girl down.

Nothing will keep this girl down.

Rebekah (Claire Holt) is a bit of a female revolutionary. She doesn’t cave to the oppression “of selfish men.” When Rebekah sees a woman being treated unfairly, she steps in and makes her point known. “Us girls have got to stick together” seems to be a motto for her. I guess I never really thought about her being the only girl in a family full of male siblings. She’s had no sister to bond with; no female friends to gab and gossip about boys with. She could allow her shortcomings to hold her back, yet she doesn’t. I love how strong she is without being made out to be an über bitch. Rebekah demands respect and she deserves it. I’m behind her all the way.

I am so excited Cami (Leah Pipes) has her memories back. The only thing that sucks about the situation is her newfound hatred for Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Now, I’m not expecting a relationship to develop between them other than friendship, but I don’t see how that’s even possible now. She’s beyond pissed and rightly so. So now she’s become a champion of the underdog. She’ll go up against Klaus in her desire to keep Davina (Danielle Campbell) safe. You have to give the woman credit where it’s due. Klaus is scary. The amount of fear most have when facing him doesn’t even register with Cami. I think her experiences with vampires have wiped the word fear from her vocabulary. Once she teams up with Rebekah … that’ll be quite the sight to see.

Baby Oh Baby

I think I’m over the Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) has a crush on Elijah (Daniel Gillies) thing. I’m convinced she’s suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. It doesn’t help that her hormones are probably raging too. Nothing like being preggers to get the sexual drive at its all time high. She’s got babysitters, a weird truce going on with Rebekah, and nothing else to bring to the table. Hayley isn’t a trusted ally. She doesn’t have any friends and is tolerated because of her current state. What’s her purpose? If she’s only meant to be an incubator, it’s seriously being done in poor form. Note to Hayley: you can’t make phone calls in a vampire compound and expect no one to overhear you. Hello, vampire senses!

Random thoughts:

The young lovers.

The young lovers.

“Joshua, my most disappointing minion.” Joshua (Steven Kreuger) just can’t catch a break, can he?

“She’ll never trust me again.” Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) finds himself in a pickle. All the girls in his life have turned against him. So what can he do? I almost feel sorry for him because he is the lesser of two evils. He doesn’t hold sway like he used to. He almost seems weak. I think Klaus has such a tight hold on him, Marcel doesn’t know whom to turn to.

“I’m strong, Josh.” I like Davina’s character growth. She started off as a naïve little girl and is now a more informed young woman.

The music is good. I’m assuming the showrunners are pulling in authentic musicians to fill the streets of the French Quarter with genuine New Orleans jazz. As a lover of jazz, I appreciate that.

Why is it that all but one of the witches always end up dying? I can’t say Sophie (Daniella Pineda) is a favorite; I wouldn’t mind seeing her bite it. She can’t be the only link to whatever else there is in New Orleans. She’s become yet another useless character.

I love the way Elijah speaks. He’s so old world with his English. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want to step into the present. He’s living in the past, which might not be a bad thing.

Memorable and funny lines:

Elijah to Marcel who’s standing too close to him, aggression falling off him in waves: “Can I suggest you take a step back?”

**

Davina shares heartbreaking news with Cami about her uncle: “He knows. He works with Marcel. They’re practically friends; he knows everything.”

**

Joshua, trying to defuse an already explosive situation: “Klaus, hey. What up? Guess what? I just moved to Turkey. Weirdly, they don’t eat turkey here.”

**

Klause to Marcel and Elijah: “The stench of your judgment is overwhelming.”

**

Have the boys met their match?

Have the boys met their match?

Although I was disappointed with the first half of “The Casket Girls,” the second half actually brought a smile to my face. I’m beyond impressed with the writers’ depiction of strong women. Most times, the characterization is skewed and women like that come across in negative ways. Here, Rebekah uses her strength for good. She wants to promote sisterhood, showing women don’t have to be the weaker sex. I’m all for that. We need more positive female depictions on TV. I’d love to know what you think.
