Personal Note: As a huge fan of the first three seasons of the original PENNY DREADFUL, I’m excited to see this incarnation. I love the colorful and sometimes volatile history of Los Angeles. PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELSis set during a time just before the first World War. Teeming with elements of the occult and supernatural, it also has mystery, drama, and intrigue. I would expect nothing less from the brilliant John Logan, creator, writer, and executive producer of the PENNY DREADFUL series. From the key art, I’m excited to see how PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS explores the story of the deity Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte (aka Santa Muerte).  If you haven’t read my mini-love letter to John Logan after the season three finale, read it here.

LOS ANGELES – January 31, 2019 – SHOWTIME has announced that Paco Cabezas (PENNY DREADFUL, The Alienist) is set to direct multiple episodes of PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS, the next chapter of the PENNY DREADFUL saga. Oscar® nominee John Logan, creator, writer and executive producer of the Emmy nominated series PENNY DREADFUL, will continue in those same roles. Cabezas directed multiple episodes of the third season of PENNY DREADFUL and served as executive producer and director of multiple episodes of Into the Badlands. He also directed on The Alienist, Deadly Class, The Strain, Fear The Walking Dead and American Gods. In film, he wrote and directed the Spanish horror film The Appeared and wrote the screenplay for the horror comedy film Sexykiller. His latest feature, Mr. Right, starring Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2015.

A spiritual descendant of the original PENNY DREADFUL story set in Victorian-era London, the next chapter opens in 1938 Los Angeles; a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, a detective is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS explores an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of the period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop. This chapter is a bold new vision that will employ all new characters and storylines.

PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS is executive produced by John Logan and Michael Aguilar (KIDDING), along with Oscar® winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road), both of Neal Street Productions. Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions will produce, and James Bagley will serve as co-executive producer.

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
