RATING:

“We do not make contact with humans.” – John Mitchell

In “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” we see the effect of cabin fever taking over. How could anyone expect the Tomorrow People (TP) to enjoy staying cooped up in their not-so-secret underground lair without rebelling? With solutions come trouble and The Tomorrow People doesn’t shy away from the drama or violence. It dives right in and shows you just how bad things can get when no one listens to their leader because the fun must be had!

Observations and thoughts:

All Tomorrow's PartiesNo matter how people feel about Jedikiah (Mark Pellegrino), I like him. Yes, it mostly has to do with Pellegrino and his awesome portrayal of the charismatic villain, but it also has to do with the conflicting emotions of the character. He’s seen in two different roles: tunnel-visioned baddie and caring uncle.  I believe Jedikiah wants to rid the world of TP but he realizes this includes his nephew Stephen (Robbie Amell). Therein lies the rub—destroying the population of TPs singles out Stephen too. I thought for sure Jedikiah would have no qualms about sacrificing Stephen for the ‘greater good’ of Ultra but maybe Uncle Jed has a tiny beating heart after all. Blood runs thicker than water and Jedikiah battles with that on a daily basis. Why else would he have pulled Stephen under his wings at Ultra? Why allow Stephen to work at Ultra (ultimately to keep a close eye on him) and roam the streets without someone watching him? Because Jedikiah wants Stephen to be in contact with the TP. I truly believe Jedikiah knows Stephen is playing double agent and Jedikiah is playing Stephen. Think about it. Why put Stephen through the ringer, showing him how Ultra can get to the TP whenever they want? It’s obvious Jedikiah knows something is off with Stephen and he’s holding his cards tightly to not show his hand. Jedikiah’s no fool.

John (Luke Mitchell) is put in an unusual situation with Stephen, Cara (Peyton List), and Russell (Aaron Yoo) vying for the TP to go topside. John knows in his heart it’s a bad idea yet gets his arm twisted to comply with his people’s wishes. “They need to understand that this isn’t a game.” So is the life of a leader. You have to make the hard decisions sometimes even though your people seem unwilling to follow your commands. I think the lesson must be learned and the TP will trust John has their best interest at heart. Not only that, Cara knows she shouldn’t second guess John. She’s learned his secret—in a wonderful display of slow motion action, by the way—and he’s lost her trust. I knew that was going to happen because how could it not? Now there’s an obstacle thrown in the way of her and John’s happily ever after. Does this mean the potential love triangle has been thwarted? Seeing the way Stephen looks at Cara in her sexy dress, I’d say it’s full steam ahead. And now that Cara’s pissed at John for not trusting her … well, who knows? I’m not rooting for a new relationship here, just pointing out the schoolboy crush Stephen obviously has on Cara. What would his bestie say about that?

All Tomorrow's PartiesAstrid (Madeleine Mantock) knows Stephen’s secret. Finally! I’ve been dying for him to come clean to the one person he can come clean to. He needs an ally, albeit a human one. Who better than Astrid to be his shoulder when he needs someone to lean on? Stephen has yet to relinquish his humanity; he’s still linked to the human world through his everyday life as a student, son, and brother. As an aside, I love how the writers pulled this theme into “All Tomorrow’s Parties” as it needs to be addressed. How unfair is it that Stephen is allowed to continue his life while the other TP must live underground like mole people? I’ve been waiting for one of the TP to bring it up and complain about the double standard. It shouldn’t matter that Stephen is working at Ultra, conspiring with the TP to take them down. If Stephen can live a normal life, why can’t the others? One easy answer to that is Stephen isn’t and hasn’t been involved in any criminal activity. And he hasn’t outed himself to a ton of humans who would remember his extraordinary powers. Dilemma, much?

Memorable and funny lines:

Darcy: “Do you have a problem taking down a girl?”

Stephen: “No. of course not. I’ve just never had to punch one in the face.”

**

Cara: “Nice shiner. Darcy?”

Stephen: “Different chick.”

Cara: “’Chick’. No wonder she clocked you.”

**

Cara to John: “What’s the point of surviving if we don’t get to really live?”

**

Cara: “We just want to know what it’s like to live like humans.”

John: “But we’re not humans.”

**

Russell: “Rule number three, which probably should be rule number one; don’t get caught bitches!”

**

John: “You undermine me in front of everyone. How are they supposed to respect me?”

Cara: Respect or obey?”

**

All Tomorrow's Parties“All Tomorrow’s Parties” is another great episode which creates mystery while engaging other secrets. We get to ‘meet’ Jedikiah’s boss without actually meeting him. I’m so confused by the knowledge we gain when Stephen has this secret encounter. Just who is the big boss and why is he a threat to the TP? I mean, he’s one of them. Bet you didn’t see that coming.
