I got one speed and it is full throttle.” – Lassiter

How long do you think it will last?

Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) is getting married to his newly paroled girlfriend, Marlowe (Kristy Swanson). While Marlowe is excited about her bachelorette party, Lassiter declares he has no time for a bachelor party because he’s responsible for all the wedding plans. Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill), along with Woody (Kurt Fuller), take it upon themselves to kidnap Lassister and give him an evening he will never forget.

“Deez Nups” is a fun episode filled with everything you would expect from a Psych wedding. In many ways, I wish this had been the highly hyped 100th episode because it had what I felt was missing —a part for everyone. The whole cast was involved,
providing a fun celebration for everyone. A few weeks ago, I mentioned my desire to see more of McNab (Sage Brocklebank). Someone must have been listening because I got my wish —just not how I intended since McNab moonlights as a semi-nude male dancer! Woody also has several funny moments where he shines, although other people might have been disgusted by his antics. There is one awkward moment in particular when he assumes the wrong thing after Lassiter tells everyone to “suit up.”

There are several ups and downs prior to the wedding, including Marlowe being kidnaped by mob boss Max Rizzo (Mike Starr). Apparently, this is in retaliation for Lassiter capturing Herb Pollock (Steve Rosen), who has enough evidence to put Max away for a long time. Everything is resolved in typical Psych fashion, and, thanks to Shawn, Lassiter is able to save the day and arrest Max and his men, allowing Lassiter and Marlowe to finally get married.

Spoiler Alert Ahead!

Psych - Season 7But let’s face it, it’s not the first 55 minutes of the show that really has people talking; it’s the last five. We knew Juliet (Maggie Lawson) would inevitably learn Shawn’s secret but after six and a half seasons, people tend to put something like that in the back of their minds. What happens unfolds almost in slow motion as we suddenly realize what’s going on. Surely Shawn could talk his way out of it but instead, he says, “Falling in love with you was never part of the plan.” It’s heartbreaking to watch Shawn explain to the woman he loves how it all happened. Juliet is clearly crushed as Shawn goes on to say: “I’m good at what I do, and what I do is good… isn’t it?” Shawn continues to justify himself but Juliet throws her drink in his face and storms off.

Shawn’s secret, especially keeping it from Juliet, has always been the elephant in the room—even more so after season five’s “Shawn 2.0,” during which Juliet’s then boyfriend Declan (Nestor Carbonell) confessed to her he was a phony. Then, in season six’s “In for a Penny,” we learn about Juliet’s father Frank (William Shatner) being a con man and her trust issues with him because of that. Shawn is the one man left Juliet felt she could trust and now all she feels is betrayed.

I’m not sure if it was always part of the plan to have Roday direct this episode because of the coming clean scene but I’m glad he did. Who better to understand the feelings and emotions involved than Roday? This is a well written and well-acted scene. I think Gus’ reaction, while brief, is powerful because without knowing exactly what happened, he knows what happened.

“Deez Nups” feels like a season ending cliffhanger because shows don’t usually do this type of thing mid-season. Nobody saw this coming and that makes it all that more powerful. I watched on Twitter as fans reacted in shock to the twist at the end, some saying they were in tears over it . Since Shawn and Juliet just moved in together, will one of them now have to move out? How will this change not only their personal relationship, but their professional one? This is a game changer for Psych and as a fan, I am glad we only have to wait a week instead of months to see how this all plays out.

Greg Staffa

I provide testosterone to the site. You won’t be reading about how nice a actress looks in a dress or how much of a hunk Matt Bomer is in my reviews. I describe colors using words like brown, not taupe. My twitter name is @staffaroadtrip because I love road trips and have done two different 48-state road trips since 2008. My favorite show is White Collar.
