Editorial: Why NBC Cancelled “The Playboy Club”

Share

It comes as no surprise that NBC has cancelled The Playboy Club. It premiered to low ratings which only got worse after each episode. Just read my latest review to find out what went wrong. However, I take exception to the statement released by The Parents Television Council president, Tim Winters just hours after news of the cancellation broke:

“Bringing The Playboy Club to broadcast television was a poor programming decision from the start. We’re pleased that NBC will no longer be airing a program so inherently linked to a pornographic brand that denigrates and sexualizes women … we hope other broadcasters heed the important lessons of this programming debacle.”

The Playboy Club was in no way pornographic in nature and this reviewer/reporter objects to the PTC portraying it as such. By any stretch of the imagination, The Playboy Club was bland, showing no more skin than what the costume allowed, and having no sex scenes other than two people lying in bed together kissing. If anything, the PTC’s portrayal of the show goes against everything women fought for in the 1960s. Furthermore, history of all kinds has been portrayed in movies and TV shows alike. Just watch Roots. Now there’s a period of time about which everyone wants to hide their heads in the sand. Face it people, not everything in our country’s history is wonderful and acceptable to everyone. But you can’t make it go away by censoring it. To allow the PTC to dictate what we should and shouldn’t watch is nothing more than censorship, something artists of all types have fought against for ages. We are in the 21st century for Pete’s sake! When will these conservative bastards realize they cannot stifle progress. Without progress, we are dead in the water. Without controversy, our world will be as bland as they are. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution gives us freedom of speech. I ask, who is the Parents Television Council to try and take that away from us?

It is my fervent hope that NBC did not bow to the pressure the PTC brought. Rather, I hope the show was cancelled because it deserved to be cancelled for its poor acting, dialogue and storylines.

Love TV, movies, and books--mostly mysteries, with a good love story thrown in every now and then. I have four adopted dogs who I adore. I love trying new recipes, and enjoy eating what I make. English language perfectionist. Reading in bed, Italian food, warm weather, the beach, all types of games = favs!

  1. Right on! Everyone is entitled to their opinion but if NBC was at all influenced by some Right-Wing fundamenatally conservative jerk-offs who probably have done more pornographic things behind their masks of righteousness imaginable, I would like to give NBC a kick in the nads. I’m sure the show was canceled due to ratings and lack of imagination in story telling which happens to a lot of networks…not just NBC. The world is changing and evolving as is should. If American television is going to keep up with the world, it needs to continue to challenge the mindset and explore more boundary pushing ideas.
