It's Jess!

New Girl is hilarious. The opening credits have an ‘80s sitcom feel but with a modern edge. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is the focus while her three roommates watch her from a bench. I can only guess what that has to do with the show, but hey, it’s amusing.

I can only recall two other times I laughed as hard while watching a new sitcom. The pilot is witty, silly, and there’s singing. Yes, there are crazy outbursts of song whenever Jess feels the need to express herself. Deschanel is fantastic, by the way. I didn’t know how she would do in a comedic role as I’ve only seen her talent showcased in dramas. She’s completely in her element and shows she’s more than just an actress—she’s also a comedian. Speaking of comedians, one of the three single guys she lives with is none other than Damon Wayans Jr. I absolutely adore him! He brings so much to the show with his natural comedic ability that I think the cast will be lost without him. (I’m saying this because Wayans is in the pilot, but will be replaced by Lamorne Morris as Winston in the second episode. Say it ain’t so FOX!) Just wait until you see how Wayans, as Coach, talks to women at his job. I almost peed my pants!

Nick, Schmidt and Coach trying to figure out the deal with Jess

With the premise being about a girl who breaks up with her cheating boyfriend then moves in with three bachelors, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. However, there is so much more to the show than I imagined. From the start, Jess is a hot mess and it’s part of the reason you fall in love with her. Which I’m sure the guys do even though they have their doubts about living with her. There’s a budding friendship between Jess, the thinks-he’s-cool-but-really-isn’t Schmidt (Max Greenfield), the recently dumped Nick (Jake Johnson) and personal trainer (yeah right!) Coach. Of course, I can’t forget the douchebag jar and LOTR references. One of Jess’ quirks is she sings to herself—a lot. “A lot.” I love Deschanel’s voice, so I think you’ll find her singing a plus. And she says, “Geesh.” Hilarity ensues. I can almost guarantee by the time you finish watching this episode you will be singing Jess’ theme song. “Who’s that girl? It’s Jess!”

Jess with her adorable glasses and girl-on-the-rebound attitude

Funny lines:

Jess, while holding up her glass of rosé: “Pink wine makes me slutty.”

Jess after striking out with a guy: “Well I guess I can’t hide my crazy.”

If you’ve seen the previews for the pilot episode of New Girl, you know what to expect. But I should stress the show is funnier than the few scenes glimpsed over the past month building up the hype for the series premiere. It’s worth your time and you will laugh out loud. I’d seriously think about drinking any beverages while watching though. Wouldn’t want you choking!

Tune in to the series premiere of New Girl, Tuesday, September 20th at 9/8c on Fox. For more on the show, visit http://www.fox.com/new-girl/.
