Are you ready for a new breed of supernatural creatures to invade your living room? Or, should I say, bedroom? Syfy has acquired a scintillating series called Lost Girl, which has become a hit in its native Canada. After watching the series premiere and subsequent second episode, I am already addicted and want more! Since the show has been established in Canada, some viewers may already be familiar with the characters, but for those of us who are in the dark, “It’s a Fae, Fae, Fae World” introduces us to the world of the Fae and invites us into another realm that coexists with the human world.

Anna Silk as Bo in LOST GIRL

Lost Girl is about a young woman named Bo, played by the beautiful Anna Silk (who I’m totally girl-crushing on at the moment). Bo is a tall, dark haired, sexy loner with a killer kiss. She doesn’t know it yet, but she is part of an ancient race of supernatural beings known as the Fae.  She is a Succubus who feeds off sexual energy. To give you more background, Bo has been on the run for over 10 years. After leaving her life in the Midwest at 18, she’s been basically feeding and fleeing for a long time. That is, until she meets wise-cracking, street savvy Kenzi (Ksenia Solo), a low-level criminal with a penchant for jacking wallets from unsuspecting victims. When Kenzi makes the mistake of taking a drink from a stranger in a hotel bar, she gets a little more than a buzz from the drugged cocktail. Fortunately, Bo works as a bartender and witnesses the event, therefore saving Kenzi before the creepy guy (Grahame Wood) has a chance to inflict further harm.

I’m over the moon about this new series! It is right up my alley in regards to the fantasy world of the supernatural that gives us a new genus and species to explore. The Fae have become popular these days, with many books such as the “The Fever Series/A MacKayla Lane Novels” featuring a bevy of Light and Dark Fae, both beautiful and hideous. If I haven’t mentioned it before, Syfy is truly one of my all-time favorite channels! I love that the network is bringing so many fantastic shows to light (e.g.,Being Human). What makes Lost Girl so unabashedly appealing to me is how Bo is portrayed as pansexual. Bo chooses whoever is willing to fall under her spell; both males and females beware because one long kiss from Bo is deadly! But hey, at least you’ll die with a smile on your face. Small consolation, I know.

L-R: Zoie Palmer as Lauren and Anna Silk as Bo in LOST GIRL

Lost Girl is sexy, engaging, funny, and absolutely entertaining; with fresh characters we don’t see much of on television. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a huge fan of my vampires, werewolves, and paranormal entities, but something about the Fae has me spellbound! Perhaps it’s Bo’s seductive ways and how she seems to capture the attention of everyone, male and female alike. Or could it be the hunky detective Dyson (Kris Holden-Reid), also a Fae, who’s piqued my interest? Dyson is some sort of shape shifter, but it’s not clear what species of Fae he is, though it’s clear is he’s got a soft spot for Bo.

After Dyson and his partner Hale (K.C. Collins) discover Bo’s true nature, they must take her to see their leader, The Ash (Clé Bennett). Bo is forced into an ancient Fae ritual to prove she is worthy but in the end she must choose between the Light or Dark Fae. After growing up with human parents, Bo is just learning about her true nature but doesn’t seem ready to accept what’s being thrust upon her. With a tempting offer from the Light Fae’s human doctor, Lauren (Zoie Palmer), in regards to helping Bo curb her insatiable appetite, Bo has a lot of choices in front of her. Not to mention, Lauren also seems to fancy Bo and there is The Morrigan (guest star Emmanuelle Vaugier), leader of the Dark Fae, offering up Fae dental benefits as the coup de grâce. But as obvious as The Morrigan’s intentions are, I am also suspicious about Lauren. Despite her good work with the Light Fae, I feel like she’s hiding something. How is it that she came to know about the Fae? Was she recruited or did she seek them out?

Funny and sexy scene between Dyson and Bo before she enters the Fae “thunderdome”:

Bo: “So, what exactly am I in here for, huh? Big bad nasties, the Lochness monster?”

Dyson: “Under Fae.”

Bo: “Under what now?”

Dyson: “Under Fae – those of our kind that don’t exactly fit in the human world; very old – very dangerous. You’ll face two.”

Bo: “Well, what are my chances?”

Dyson: “I wouldn’t bet on you.”

Bo: “Have I spit in your coffee or something!? What is your deal!?”

Dyson: “Kiss me.”

Bo: “Wow! Are you bad at reading women!”

Dyson: “We don’t have time for this; you need all of the strength you can get so take some of mine.”

Bo: “Will I kill you?”

Dyson: “Just kiss me.”

Ahem…the kiss is beyond steamy!

Bo: “Ooh, ooh, WOW! Did you…did you feel that! That was like…that was like the Fourth of July in my mouth! (pause) Hey, you stopped me. No one’s ever stopped me before!”

Dyson: “Fae are different than humans. Your powers don’t work the same on all of us.”

Bo: “Well, how am I supposed to beat these guys?”

Dyson: “You be faster; you be smarter. They’re gonna underestimate you – use that to your advantage.”

Bo: “I misjudged you. You got any other advice?”

Dyson: “Don’t get dead.”

Bo: “And you’re back to being an asshole, that’s nice!”

Lost Girl Cast

I love the puzzled look on Bo’s face when Dyson blurts out “Kiss me,” and how incredulous she looks after he tells her, “Don’t get dead.” Will Dyson be able to contain his newfound interest in Bo or will he succumb to her feminine wiles as easily as a human? How will Bo fare against two mythical Fae creatures having no experience whatsoever? Will she choose Light or Dark Fae or continue to straddle (pun intended) the line between both?

Lost Girl is a colorful mix of supernatural drama, light and dark comedy, with a lot of sex appeal to spice up your Monday nights!

Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.

Have you read the fever series by Karen Mooning?? You don’t know Fae until then.

    1. Hi Jenn,
Yes I have read the Fever Series by Karen M. Moning. Very good series – and very different versions of Fae in those books. I love the exploration KMM does with the Fae race. She has Unseelie and Seelie (Dark and Light) and their respective castes – from low castes to high castes/royalty. And who doesn’t love Barrons – ooh, super sexy beast! I love Mac too! She’s a spirited one! But that doesn’t take away from the intriguing Fae in the LOST GIRL series. I really enjoy the show and love seeing what new Fae will turn up each week. Thanks for commenting…hope to hear more from you!

I REALLY want to like this series as much as you do, but honestly, let’s go over the details here:

    1. Bo has been on the run for 10 years, we’re assuming, right? But she just naturally falls into a friendship and social interaction with Kenzi after being alone for SO long. There’s no, “Gosh, this is the first person I have spent long periods of time with” awkwardness like I would think from someone who isn’t used to having people around much. Most people don’t go from feeling like reject outlaws to playing Susie Homemaker with someone in a week. And WHERE is Kenzi from, again? Did she have an apartment, or friends, or family who might stop and go, “Should we really be letting our daughter move in with some chick she just met at a bar?” Even if the answer is “yes,” it would be nice to see a little more character depth and history here. Everyone just SHOWS UP!

    2. DvL Fae: Can someone please tell me the difference between the Light and the Dark Fae? From what I’ve seen, the difference is in name only. BOTH sides watch Bo engage in what I can only imagine is some sort of Fae-ish Bat Mitzvah, since everyone’s concern is that Bo walks into this bout “untrained.” That leads me to believe there IS some kind of training that generally occurs, but not for our brunette hero. Ok, fine… but EVERYONE stands around and watches? In other episodes, Light Fae say that they’re not allowed to just go running around killing their own kind…. unless it’s a sporting event? They seem pretty much the same to me, which makes choosing a side, frankly, silly. Which leads us to…

    3. Choosing a side: Why? Why choose a side? She’s a threat as a “loner”? Why? Nobody ever explains that. Does she need to pay dues or something? What happens if she isn’t included in a side? Is that just the way it is here, or is that the same in every city? If it’s the same everywhere, why is THIS the first time she has ever been approached by Fae in 10 years? She’s left bodies behind before… hasn’t SOMEONE noticed, or is Dyson just that good?

    4. Dyson: Oh, don’t get me wrong, he’s a hottie, but let’s be fair: the actor may be good, but the character is not that deep. He’s likeable, but he just falls into bed with Bo? Even assuming that there’s some chemistry there, does he just sleep with every hot Fae chick he meets? Look, Bo is nice, but she’s not drop-dead hilarious, she seems smart, but she’s no Einstein, do they have similar music tastes? Is he drawn to her vulnerability because he in fact feels vulnerable and lost sometimes in the human world? We don’t really know what the connection is, and the writers don’t seem to care either. They just have sex because she needs to have sex… or kiss… which brings me to my last point:

    5. Sex. Ok, so she loses her virginity at 18, when she has sex with her high school sweetheart, and he dies. That’s TRAUMATIC!! If I killed someone with sex, especially if I were raised in a religious home, I doubt I would be running around having sex with just anyone! That messes a person up! So… she probably hasn’t been intimate with someone in a while, if a kiss will kill just as quickly. Which means I would have expected more reluctance and awkwardness when she and Dyson finally hop in the sack. But no… it’s full steam ahead! Maybe his “junk” can cure Cancer AND emotional trauma. GO DYSON!

Look, I like the series, it’s cute. But let’s be fair about the serious holes here. The writers are a little lazy with their main characters and the back story, and everyone walks around like they just popped up to fulfill the plot, without any internal conflict. It’s a cute story, and I’ll watch, but it’s no Buffy, or even Supernatural. Still, it’s a new little thing on SciFy.

    1. You make valid points but I think if you keep trying to fill in the holes so soon just as the series is starting, it leaves little room for the series to grow. The first episode is establishing characters – giving us a glimpse of who they are.
      1. Bo – She’s been on the run but she’s not a little girl anymore. She’s a 28 year old woman. Everyone has that meter within us to determine if someone is friend or foe. We get vibes – maybe her FAE vibes about Kenzi were she’s ok to hang out with. She saved her life afterall. Sometimes you just strike a cord with someone – like kindred spirits if you will. Does it make sense, not all the time but does it have to?
      2. Dark Fae – Light Fae – All Fae. Light and Dark, I’m sure their purpose will be revealed in the coming episodes. It’s not clear what their objective is. they are still on the verge of war so it will unfold in time…
      3. Choosing a side – we all choose to walk a path in life. We either walk on the side of ‘good’ meaning we don’t break (too many) laws and are decent to other people or we are criminals and deviants. OR we walk down the middle, being bad sometimes and being good sometimes. It’s clear Bo has chosen the middle ground.
      4. Dyson – Not deep now, the series is still progressing. Maybe he’s been without female companion for a while; Maybe Bo’s kiss threw down some serious Voodoo and has him jonesing for more. Who knows…who cares…it’s fun to watch!
      5. Sex – she was traumatized. She’s been on the run and never getting close to anyone for 10 years. She’s damaged but now she’s tired of running and is close to finding answers to her origin. After 10 years of sucking the life out of people, I think she’s very happy to find someone like Dyson who won’t be killed by her FAE-ness.

Yes there is room for improvements but enjoy if for what it is…something different than vamps and werewolves and ghosts…its FAE!

      Thanks for the comments!
