Review: Haven, S3, Ep. 305 – “Double Jeopardy”

Air Date: Friday, October 19, 2012, 10/9c on Syfy

Rating:

“I don’t know if love is something that can be erased.” —Audrey

Are you thinking twice before doing bad deeds or unlawful acts? I would be too. “Lady Justice” is no joke in “Double Jeopardy.” But does the punishment always fit the crime? This week’s episode struggles with that question as some of the local residents succumb to tragic comeuppances via the lady in white. However, the question remains—who decides if the person deserves what they get for their wrong doing?

Observations:

Duke tries to defend himself in court…but it’s moot since the judge is corrupt and probably couldn’t care less.

Duke (Eric Balfour) seems to be garnering the attention of “Lady Justice” more ferociously than others. Sure, Duke has some unpaid parking tickets and “a questionable liquor license,” but does that constitute him being tossed around like a rag doll by the slightly demure lady in white? But his being targeted does make for an enticing setup.

Duke: “I have a troubled stalker.”

Audrey (Emily Rose): “I’m immune to the troubles, so maybe I can stop her, alright. Duke, you’ll stay with me tonight.”

Nathan (Lucas Bryant) rolls his eyes incredulously.

Duke: “I sleep in the raw.”

Audrey: “Oh.” (She walks away)

Nathan: “You know she’s using you as bait, right?”

Oh, I think you just burst Duke’s bubble, Nathan. And don’t think the tension between Duke and Audrey has gone unnoticed; however, I think Duke is more into Audrey. She is still having issues with her impending disappearing act when “The Hunter” meteor storm arrives. I know she still has strong feelings for Nathan but is too afraid to give in to them. As much as I would love for her and Duke to kiss, just once, I want Audrey and Nathan to be together.

Nathan is crossing a fine line when he agrees to a prison transfer to prove himself to the tattooed people.

Speaking of kisses, why is Nathan playing tonsil hockey with Jordan (Kate Kelton)? Is this all part of his undercover work to infiltrate the tattooed people’s colony, or is he licking his wounds from Audrey pushing him away? I know Jordan may not be well received by the many loyal Haven fans who are cheering for an Audrey-Nathan hookup; however, look at Jordan’s “trouble.” She inflicts massive pain when she touches people. That means she can’t be touched; no hugs, no caress of the cheek, and no sex! You’d be Miss Cranky Pants, too. But Nathan, whose “trouble” is that he can’t physically feel anything, can touch her. He can hug her and kiss her, passionately I might add. Did you like his cool moves, kissing Jordan and then just walking out? You know she will be ready to pounce the next time she sees him. I would be.

I’ve always been fascinated by Nathan’s “trouble.” If he can’t physically feel anything, how does he know if he has shoes on or if his gun holster is on? I think this is one aspect the writers could emphasize—making Nathan do more body checks on himself…no, not that kind of body check. But, I guess that would apply, too, if you think about it. Shirt? Check. Shoes? Check. Gun? Check. Pants? Check. Penis? Double Check.

Audrey makes a valid point about not involving Dave (John Dunsworth) and Vince (Richard Donat) in the police investigation of the “bolt-gun killer” and “The Colorado Kid.” Those two brothers are too invested and they know more than they care to share. I am really anxious for more history on these brothers. In “Over My Head,” Det. Tommy Bowen (Dorian Missick), the newest member to join Haven, mentioned he found out that Dave and Vince own half of Haven’s commercial businesses through a series of dummy corporations, and they are millionaires. If that isn’t a window into a fantastic backstory, I don’t know what is.

Funny line:

Dave: “Your Lady Justice might be a Golum.”

Duke: “The ‘Lord of the Ring’ guy?”

While I enjoyed most of “Double Jeopardy,” I wasn’t enthralled like I normally am each week. There were obvious moments I enjoyed; for instance, when Duke and Audrey battle “Lady Justice,” and then stand face to face after the encounter. Also, when Nathan kisses Jordan but overall, I just wasn’t impressed with the “troubled” case. Although, I’ve seen next week’s episode in advance and thoroughly enjoyed it — mind games from a house that has a “troubled” soul. So tune in next week for the Halloween episode with guest star Iain Glen (Game of Thrones).
