Warehouse 13 – “A Faire to Remember” Recap. No Joking Around.

Season 5, Episode 3

“…Crazy Girl carries a lot more stigma than Coma Girl.” – Claudia

“A Faire to Remember” isn’t the best episode but has its moments of fun. As our agents split into various assignments, we find Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Jinks (Aaron Ashmore) investigating strange occurrences at a renaissance faire, while Myka (Joanne Kelly) helps Claudia (Allison Scagliotti) with her comatose sister Claire (guest star Chryssie Whitehead). Meanwhile, Artie (Saul Rubinek) tries to put dangerous artifacts back inside the “dark vault.”

When I Grow Up

With Claire being in a coma the last 15 years, she’s missed a lot: watching Claudia—who was only seven when everything went to pot—grow up, missing the Garbage concert, and realizing the internet isn’t just a fad like her dad said it was. Claudia and Myka think they have saved Claire from the clutches of the cursed music box, but things are not as they seem. When Claudia and Myka use two artifacts to extract the curse from Claire’s mind and transfer it into another artifact to contain it, they fail to realize exactly how the music box curse works. The only way to contain the curse is to transfer it to another living thing. Myka gets “whammied” with the curse and she unleashes her anger and frustration on poor Artie.

Meanwhile, Claudia—oblivious to what’s happening to Myka—is out having a blast with her big sister. Claudia takes her to her favorite coffee shop where she sometimes has gigs as a musician. The two bond over coffee and an impromptu sing along as they cover Garbage’s hit song “When I Grow Up.” Ironic song choice, wouldn’t you say? The lyrics, “When I grow up, I’ll be stable,” however, Claire is far from stable, especially after Claudia tells her their parents are gone. Claire begins to remember things that happened and realizes she wasn’t in the car when the accident happened that supposedly caused her coma. But in all fairness, it wasn’t Claire’s fault – she was under the influence of the music box’s curse.

As much as I enjoyed the reminiscing between the two sisters, more because I’m a huge Garbage fan myself, it felt too rushed. As we all know by now, Warehouse 13 is coming to end very soon. “A Faire to Remember” marks the midpoint of this final season, and doesn’t really provide much depth rather than a prompt closure to the dilemma of saving Claudia’s sister.

And with Myka feeling the effects of the music box, she reveals things about her cancer scare, how alone she was, and this leads to a future plot point coming up in the next episode.

A Knight in Shining Fear

Surely you jest…

Watching Ryan Cartwright portray a dimwitted “doofer” named Oswald at a renaissance fair kind of shatters my image of him as the intelligent squint with a British accent on Bones. I’m actually still mourning Vincent Nigel-Murray’s death. I digress. Cartwright is British but dons an American accent for his character. Things seem to always go awry for this young man who’s trying to work his way up the ranks at the fair. After three seasons with the fair, he’s still a “doofer,” basically someone who fills in where needed and the person who gets dunked in the dunking tank.

After having his fortune read he hopes his luck will change but the tarot cards aren’t just ordinary cards (they’re an artifact) – if Oswald doesn’t face his fears and become a hero, he will “die.”

As much as I love a good renaissance fair, this just bored me. I liked seeing Pete and Jinks work together, but not even Pete’s Pete-isms could pull me from my stupor.

I wish there was more to tell but sadly, there isn’t. Oswald finally becomes the hero to conquer “Death” (Rob Archer) who challenges him to a sword duel. When the fair lady in waiting Catarina (guest star Erin Way) is about to be killed, Oswald vanquishes Death and gets the girl.

Overall

“A Faire to Remember” basically gives closure on Claudia’s sister’s dilemma, but as we all know Claudia is bound and determined to find a way to save Claire. While this episode lacks in many areas, the next episode, “Savage Seduction,” will make you ‘muy feliz’ (very happy).
