The OriginalsSeason 1, Episode 18

Air Date: Thursday, April 15, 2014, 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“Morning’s sun offers the best light.” – Klaus Mikaelson

The Originals is based in New Orleans but I only remember that when someone actually says the city’s name. What’s happened to the strains of faint jazz music permeating the air, characters featured walking through the Quarter, important scenes playing out on the city streets? The vampires don’t need to be locked away in darkness as they can brave the light. The witches are human beings with supernatural power; they have no restrictions on when or where they roam. The city of New Orleans is as much a character in The Originals as the supernaturals. Let’s not forget about her, writers.

Well Then…

Cami goes toe-to-toe with the witch who thinks she knows it all.

The special effects keep things interesting but I’d like to continue getting the inside scoop on the different quarreling groups. You know the vampires, werewolves, and witches roaming the area? Have I missed something? I know there was a treaty signed (what a joke) but that won’t last. Peace does not a city cloaked in chaos make. But in “The Big Uneasy,” we don’t have long to wait before the good times begin. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) continual peeing match over Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). They have to have some ‘helpless’ woman to quarrel over, don’t they? I find this like-triangle interesting because Klaus claims to want nothing to do with Hayley, yet he’s all up in Elijah’s face when the older Mikaleson steps up to protect her. This new sibling rivalry circles around the “treaty” signed between vampires, witches, humans, and werewolves. Everyone has their own agenda in this game. It’s a great story arc for The Originals. There’s nothing detrimental for the Original brothers to go up against, so why not reintroduce the underlying tension among the supes? Which group are you siding with? I’m still undecided but I think I’ll always be on Elijah’s side. Gillies excels as the leader of a rouge band of misfits, trying desperately to keep a city from falling apart. His consistent oozing of charisma doesn’t hurt either.

Random Tidbits:

I find it strange hearing my first name on television every week but Monique (recurring guest star Yasmine Al Bustami) is a character I can get behind. She’s strong-willed, confident, and is a woman on a mission. As I’ve stated in previous reviews, The Originals doesn’t fit the typical mold of other paranormal TV shows. Strong women abound and aren’t looked at as PMS’ing bitches because of their strength. I enjoy watching Bustami in this role as it fits her perfectly. She’s young, with an innocent face that hides the venom within. Excellent casting here.

“I believe the words you’re looking for are thank you.” Cami (Leah Pipes) is no longer under Klaus’ spell. She’s trying her hardest to stay out of supernatural business, yet she keeps being pulled back in. I wonder what will become of her once she’s no longer a person of interest. I don’t believe Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) is in love with her, nor do I believe Klaus is harboring deep rooted feelings for the blonde bartender. Cami is a pawn and nothing more. I’m waiting for her to up her game and show these vampires she isn’t to be used.

What has Hayley become the center of?

Marcel continues to fight the good fight. I feel sorry for him as he’s not the man he used to be. What happened to the ‘king’ who wasn’t to be defeated? Where’s the big bad vampire leader calling home now that he’s exiled? Watching Marcel’s downfall has been an interesting turn of events. I’m secretly rooting for him to get one up on Klaus. Someone needs to put that hybrid in his place.

Memorable lines:

Monique, after falling into a fit á la The Exorcist: “I wasn’t possessed; I was channeling the ancestors. They say it’s time to complete the reaping. To do that, the fourth harvest girl must be resurrected, which means it’s time for Genevieve to die.”

**

Klaus to Elijah: “No child of mine will be born in the swamp.”

**

Marcel: “All we have to do is light a match.”

Thierry: “And where do we buy matches? Look around, Marcel; we have nothing.”

Marcel: “I started with nothing.”

**

Genevieve to Monique: “You’ll have your sacrifice, but I have things to do before I die.”

**

Elijah to Hayley: “That was too easy. Don’t trust him; don’t trust any of them.”

**

Final Thoughts:

Is Klaus to be trusted? I think he's trying to win Davina's confidence for his own purpose.

I don’t like the way the witches treat Davina (Danielle Campbell). She’s the red-headed stepchild no one wants to play with. Is anyone else waiting for her to regain her power and show those witches she means business?
