Some Wishes Come True-ish. Review: Haven — “The Trouble with the Troubles”

“The Trouble with the Troubles” gives us so many shocking revelations, I literally clasped my hand to my mouth when the biggest reveal happened. I’m not even sure I am typing of my own volition because I’m in a state of disbelief. Not denial, just a state of ‘What the heck just happened?!’ Haven continues to be fresh, inventive, and downright surprising.

The Safest Town in Maine

Haven? Safe and trouble free? The worst that’s happened so far is vandalism? This is obviously the work of someone’s trouble but who and how? And although Haven may be (pseudo) safe, the residents are not quite the same. Audrey (Emily Rose) is still Audrey, of course, because she’s immune to the troubles but Duke (Eric Balfour) is a “third generation cop” in the Haven PD. Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant) is now Dr. Nathan Hansen, and Vince (Richard Donat) and Dave (John Dunsworth) are brothers who own the Haven Herald but they aren’t the same Vince and Dave we know. I’m not sure if I like the new Vince and Dave but then again, I’m not liking the newer, safer Haven either.

Balfour does a great job of playing the adept detective who will not tolerate insolence on the job. I really enjoy watching Balfour become a new character while maintaining a touch of Duke. And Bryant kills me as he portrays Dr. Hansen, a guy who is slightly inept but charming and funny. I absolutely adore the side part in his hair and the jokes he makes to Duke about stealing his “Han Solo lunchbox,” in the third grade. These two guys are friends both on and off screen and it shows.

The New Badass in Town

William (Colin Ferguson) is devious, manipulative, cunning, and ruthless. He is also immune to the troubles. Dun-Dun-Duuuun.

Audrey: “You’re immune to the troubles?”

William: “Just. Like. You. I told you we were connected.”

But just how connected they are will astound you. Ferguson is an absolute joy to watch. He becomes this mega, ultra, super douche as William, letting nothing or no one stand in his way to get through to Audrey, the supposed love of his life. Ferguson played the lovable Sheriff Carter on Syfy’s Eureka but he detours so far from that sweet guy, he’s almost unrecognizable. I love it! His warning put chills down my spine. He speaks softly to Audrey, “…and if you’re not gonna help me bring the old Haven back…hmm…then I’m gonna have to do it myself, and I won’t be delicate about it.” Ferguson truly commands the screen, making it difficult to take your eyes off him when he’s casually wiping his hands, punching someone in the face or shooting people. GASP!

I’m so anxious to find out what the writers have in store for us after the shocking revelation about William and Audrey’s past and how it relates to the troubles. In “The New Girl,” Jordan (Kate Kelton) said she thought the troubles were Audrey’s trouble. It would explain the reason why Audrey has to keep coming back to help; however, what William suggests makes it seems like Haven won’t exist if Audrey’s trouble ends. And didn’t you find it odd that Audrey was wearing the same cool Haven t-shirt she was wearing in trouble-free Haven when she wakes up in regular Haven? She is immune to the troubles but if trouble-free Haven was just a dream/wish, how could she come back wearing different clothes. Note to self: I want/need that t-shirt!

Who is Agent Howard (Maurice Dean Wint)? Is he a version of William? Audrey comments that something William said was similar to what Howard said, so it’s plausible.

Overall

“The Trouble with the Troubles” is another great episode but it leaves many questions either unanswered or partially answered. It also leaves a huge cliffhanger concerning William and Audrey’s connection. I simply cannot believe it but at the same time, it makes sense. Although I really enjoy Ferguson on Haven, I hope there is some way to get rid of William without killing Audrey.
