With the success of Cinemax’s highly intriguing and intense counter-terrorism series, Strike Back, the network is trying to hit gold again with its new suspense series, Nemesis. The show, set to air in 2012, deals with international espionage at an elite private intelligence firm and stars Melissa George (30 Days of Night, In Treatment). With the description below from creator Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files, Strike Back), it looks like I’ll be adding another show to my must-watch TV list.

NEW YORK, Nov. 22, 2011 – Production has begun on NEMESIS, an original drama series set in the world of international espionage starring Melissa George (“30 Days of Night,” HBO’s “In Treatment”) and written and created by Frank Spotnitz (“The X-Files,” CINEMAX’s “Strike Back”).  The eight episodes will shoot in Scotland, London and Morocco and air on CINEMAX in 2012.  Also starring Adam Rayner (“Hawthorne”), the series is produced by Kudos Film & Television (“MI-5,” “Life on Mars”) for BBC One and HBO/CINEMAX in association with Big Light Productions.

Says Spotnitz, “I’m incredibly excited about the ambition of this series.  It’s got action on a cinematic scale, huge story twists and turns, and intriguing characters who are both emotionally and morally complex.  I can’t imagine a better cast, director or production team to bring it all to life.”

Award-winning writer Spotnitz also serves as executive producer along with Alison Jackson, Jane Featherstone and Stephen Garrett from Kudos Film & Television and Christopher Aird from the BBC.  Eliza Mellor (“Albert Schweitzer,” “Derek”) produces, and SJ Clarkson (“Heroes,” “Life On Mars”) directs the first two episodes.

George plays Sam, a highly skilled operative for an elite private intelligence firm, who survives an attempt on her life that may have been orchestrated by members of her own team.  Once she returns to the firm, she performs her secretive duties without knowing who to trust or who wants her dead.  Rayner plays Sam’s love interest and colleague at work.  The dedicated members of the firm, who operate in the shadows, often confront life and death situations on secret missions and are sometimes unaware of who or what they’re fighting for.

The cast of NEMESIS also includes Stephen Dillane (HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and “John Adams”), Morven Christie (“The Young Victoria”), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (“Lost,” CINEMAX’s “Strike Back”), Lex Shrapnel (“Captain America:  The First Avenger”), Uriel Emil (“Criminal Justice”), Patrick Malahide (“Billy Elliot,” HBO’s “Five Days”), Stephen Campbell Moore (“The Bank Job,” “The History Boys”) and Oscar Kennedy (“Toast”).

  1. Hi Ben,

Thanks for your comment. I agree, this sounds like another awesome series from creator Spotnitz. If it has as much intrigue and action as Strike Back, it will certainly be another huge hit for Cinemax. I checked out the new Cinemax site you offered but unfortunately, it’s not in English. 🙁 Do you have the link to the English site?

I knew Cinemax is working on new original series like “The Transporter”, “Banshee”, and “Strike Back”, but I hadn’t even heard of ‘Nemesis’. This sounds like an awesome series especially since it’s created and written by Frank Spotnitz (Strike Back is one of my favorite shows). You can find previews of ‘Nemesis’ and their movie lineups at the new Cinemax site. Thanks to Linda for the read.
