After a short break, Grimm returns with “Synchronicity,” picking up with Nick (David Giuntoli) pondering whether he should be Monroe’s (Silas Wier Mitchell) best man. What’s interesting is something Hank (Russell Hornsby) asks, “How do Wesen even know you’re a Grimm?” I’ve thought about that myself. I foolishly thought it’s because Nick can see them “woge” — change into their Wesen form; however, humans can see Wesen too, if the Wesen chooses to let them. Just ask Hank. In the Wesen carnival case in “The Show Must Go On,” Hank saw a whole lot of woging going on. Now, in “Synchronicity,” Monroe and Rosalee (Bree Turner) tell us, from personal experience, exactly how Wesen know Nick is a Grimm. I found it quite interesting, although a bit boring, but interesting nonetheless. I was hoping Nick looked different to them, too, but it’s more ocular than facial. It would be great if the writers and special effects department would show us how Nick looks in a future episode.
While all the wedding talk is stirring up anxious feelings and such for Nick and Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch), “Synchronicity” focuses more on Meisner (Damien Puckler) helping Adalind (Claire Coffee) and the baby get out of harm’s way.
Not Out of the Woods Yet
Prince Viktor’s (Alexis Denisof) strong desire to possess the baby is quite a perplexing plot point. In “Synchronicity,” we see the return of Kelly (guest star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), Nick’s mother, who plays a vital role in helping Meisner and Adalind. Through Kelly’s conversation with Adalind, we learn a few things but not why the baby is so important. That is, until Kelly shows up at Nick’s asking for his help with the situation. Prince Viktor would love nothing more than to control the child’s future for his own personal gain while Adalind wants to be a mother and protect the baby. Remember, the infant has royal blood although until now, we didn’t know whether the child’s father is Sean (Sasha Roiz) or his half-brother Eric (James Frain). As much as Nick and Juliette despise the thought of helping Adalind, how can they turn away an infant? I agree with Kelly on one point in particular—the baby cannot be raised by either the resistance or the royals. Her upbringing must be normal but how normal can it be when she the baby is already exhibiting powers of her own? Kelly knows a lot about how the baby got her powers and how Adalind regained her Hexenbiest powers. The real questions we should be asking are where has Kelly been all this time, and what has she done with those coins? I’m sure Nick is thinking about this but with his mother showing up out of the blue, he hasn’t really had time to process it all.
Things of Note
Adalind seems to have changed since giving birth. She was so willing to sell the baby to get her powers back and now that the baby has arrived, she has barely let the child go. I’m a bit concerned about the contract she entered into with Stefania (Shohreh Aghdashloo). Remember the powder Stefania dusted on the document and then forced Adalind to put her hand in it, leaving a burning handprint? Stefania was working for Viktor so I’m curious whether the writers will use the contract at some point to force Adalind’s hand. Could the handprint be a tracking device? Will Adalind have to give the child to someone else to raise in order to protect her? As we see in a flashback from Kelly’s past, sometimes a mother has to do the unthinkable to protect her children.
Adalind’s transformation also seems to apply to her feelings toward Meisner. The way she looks at him when he runs toward her after being taken by the Verrat is quite telling. It’s plain to see Meisner is taken aback by his feelings as well. He’s risking his life to save hers but really goes above and beyond. Do you want to see these two get together? I’m leaning toward the idea myself. Sean doesn’t want that kind of relationship with Adalind, at least not the Adalind he knew before. But things are different now. Adalind has changed since losing her powers, being pregnant, regaining her powers, and becoming a mother.
Although Adalind has softened a little, a piece of the old Adalind pops out when she tries to have a conversation with Kelly on the plane. “Look, I don’t know who you are, and I have no idea if you know who I am, but I just delivered my baby in the middle of the woods and we’ve been running for our lives ever since. I’m a little tired; I’m a little hungry; I’m very sore; and I’ve seen a lot of people killed. So, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a little conversation.”
How does the Verrat know where the safe house is in order to intercept Meisner and Adalind? Is there a traitor within the resistance?
The baby’s eyes…I want, no, I need to know more.
“Synchronicity” is a very intriguing and revealing episode. We learn a lot and the story lines move forward. There are a few moments that drag a little but overall, “Synchronicity” holds my attention and keeps me interested in what will come to pass. Did I just have a Gandalf moment? I’m anxious to find out where Kelly has been and what she’s done with the coins. I’m also wondering to what lengths Sean will go to protect Adalind and the baby. Will Meisner come to Portland? Will we ever find out what really happened to Kelly and Nick’s father; in particular, the reasons why she gave a very young Nick to her sister for safe keeping?
