The OriginalsSeason 1, Episode 16

Air Date: Thursday, March 11, 2014, 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“What is this? Some melodramatic vincture designed to garner my sympathy.” – Klaus

A tad overdone, overacted, and overwrought with drama, “Farewell to Storyville” drives The Originals of the proverbial cliff. I thought we went through this sibling rivalry hoopla before. I’m not sure why we have to return to the ‘woe is me’ stories of the Original family. The bad wigs, drab clothing, and sienna tinted camera lens has been done already. Where are the awe inspiring flashbacks? I don’t want to see the heartrending and dismal bits. Writers, you want to rouse your viewers, and keep them watching, don’t overwhelm them with depressing storylines. This is supposed to be entertaining, after all.

Observations and thoughts:

Did you feel like telling Klaus to "shut up" like Rebekah did?

Did you feel like telling Klaus to “shut up” like Rebekah did?

A father’s love is something that cannot be replaced. The memories of a childhood gone sour can haunt a person for all of their years. We see this with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and his unrelenting father Mikael (Sebastian Roche). Well, technically, Mikael isn’t Klaus’ father and that’s the crux of the situation. But here’s the thing—Klaus harbors anger toward his stand-in dad while really blaming his siblings. They weren’t abused as Klaus was; weren’t made to feel less than because they weren’t the bastard child. Klaus may hate his father but he hates his brother and sister just as much. Without their reciprocal hate, he has nothing. So in “Farewell to Storyville” we see Klaus come to the realization that his anger isn’t really anger at all.

Random thoughts:

Ever the noble brother, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) stands up for his siblings—both of them. But that’s the unwritten rule for older siblings. They are the protectors of their younger family members. I think Gillies does a tremendous job of effectively promoting the emotions of a brother who cares so much it hurts him.

I think Cami (Leah Pipes) is going to be the moral compass for The Originals. She only seems to come around when the writers feel it necessary to put across some motivating point. She comes across as having a high moral code, yet she isn’t as innocent as she appears.

Strike a pose!

I’m not sure how I feel about Davina (Danielle Campbell) making a return to the living. She hasn’t always been the most engaging character. What is her purpose now if she’s unable use her powers? Why bring her back when she really has nothing to live for? I liked her as the big, bad witch. Now, she’s just a lost little girl.

Memorable lines:

Rebekah to Marcel, contemplating her fate: “We almost got away.”

**

Rebekah in a poignant moment with Marcel: “What an odd thing it is to be here one minute, then gone the next. Rather terrifying.”

**

Klaus to Elijah: “You look at me, and you see everything you abhor in yourself. Sure, you dress it up with your fancy suits, and your handkerchiefs; you with your mask of civility and eloquence. You’re every bit the abomination I am. Or worse.”

**

I bet Rebekah will show up in Mystic Falls. There's a certain blond fellow living there she has a thing for.

While not too impressed with “Farewell to Storyville,” I appreciate the sentiment behind the episode. I’m all caught up on Original family drama, and will probably shed a tear for the changes that have been made. Now, I’d like to see some forward movement. Klaus has his kingdom once again; the werewolves are off finding peace (I think); and the witches no longer live in fear of vampires. So what’s next?
