Cover Blown? Almost. Review: "The Tomorrow People" - In Too Deep

“We all made sacrifices, Stephen, but somehow, you think you’re special.” – John

The Tomorrow People enthralls its audience with fancy visual effects, witty dialogue, and smart acting. I’m still intrigued with the show and look forward to each new episode. You have to wonder what’s going to happen next with people who can teleport. I’m still waiting to see someone else end up someplace that wasn’t planned (like Stephen (Robbie Amell) in his neighbors’ bed). That would be hilarious. But for now, The Tomorrow People is slowly building momentum. Who else thinks the long lost dad will show up soon?

Observations and thoughts:

I don’t want to say Stephen has met his match, but I think he needs to be careful he doesn’t overplay his newfound powers. He’s not an expert yet and it shows. “Still working out a few kinks with the whole teleporting thing.” Not only is he inexperienced, he’s still in the process of learning to handle the responsibility of being superhuman.

Hottest. Sparring. Scene. Ever. So what’s the real deal with these two?

“You can trust him, John.” Cara (Peyton List) wants to believe in Stephen; she wants him to be the hope for all superhumans alike. But what if he isn’t? What if he’s just a kid who’s like his father, but not really like his father?

John (Luke Mitchell) and Cara have a friends with benefits thing going on. I was hoping there wouldn’t be room for a love triangle in at least one show I was watching this season, but what can you do. It’s a popular trope being used in anything teen related. Stephen may feel his connection with Cara gives him an advantage in the relationship department, but John is more mature. He’s the self-proclaimed leader of the Tomorrow People (TP) and I can’t see him relinquishing his place for a newbie. It might be fun to see how this all plays out.

Dr. Jedikiah Price (Mark Pellegrino) is slick … and smooth. So smooth he can threaten you with a calm voice laced with steel. Well, that and the dead bodies that seem to turn up just in time for Stephen to see them. Talk about getting your point across. I don’t think he’d kill his nephew, but he’ll be sure to put the fear of God in Stephen. Jedikiah gives me the chills. I know it’s all Pellegrino’s acting abilities. He’s the ultimate bad guy and portrays them like no other. Too bad he doesn’t have a lot of screen time. I’d like to get to know Jedikiah’s motivation. He has to have some secret desire for finding and ridding the world of TP’s aside from hating his brother. Sibling rivalry can be a strong motivator, but I don’t think that’s the case here. Just what is Jedikiah is after? Does he want what the TP have? Envy is just as good a motivator as anger.

Bad man with a lot of power. Can’t wait to find out who Jedikiah answers to.

Marlo (Sarah Clarke) believes her son is turning out to be like his father Jack (Jeffrey Pierce). Why is that such a bad thing? Did she think he was crazy? Did she believe her husband to be a threat to her family even though she didn’t want him to leave? I don’t think I understand the family dynamic. From the flashbacks we’ve seen of Stephen and his father, the guy didn’t appear to be a bad dad. To get the full picture, we’d have to be privy to Marlo’s memories. Even the TP think Jack was/is something special.

OK, so maybe Russell (Aaron Yoo) is going to provide the comic relief to counterbalance the dramatic elements of Stephen’s life. He tosses out witty lines at the right time, easing the tension during a serious moment. It’s a dirty job but somebody’s gotta do it.

Memorable and funny lines:

Astrid: “Where’d you come from? I was waiting for you outside.”

Stephen: “Uh, I teleported.”

Stephen: “I will do whatever it takes to find my dad.”

John to T.I.M. the talking computer: “Sorry I can’t take you back to where I stole you for maintenance. Ultra wouldn’t like that.”

Stephen to Cara: “OK, we have to establish some ground rules, like not being in each other’s head while we’re naked.”

Dr. Price: “And Stephen, no one barges into my office. I’ll make an exception this one time because you’re new, and you’re family.”

John: “Stephen, we are not superheroes.”

Who made John the leader of the TP? Why has he decided to take on that responsibility?

The camaraderie between the cast comes through on The Tomorrow People. You can tell this is a group of actors who enjoy their job and the people they work with. “In Too Deep” delves into the closeness of the group and proves how tight-knit the TP are. Up next week is a rescue mission. Will the TP succeed? Gotta stay tuned to find out.
