“I signed in blood, then you took my soul.” — Irving

As season two of Sleepy Hollow progresses, we are given clues as to what Henry (John Noble) is plotting. His actions have purpose yet it isn’t quite clear yet how the pieces of the puzzle fit together. One thing is for certain, former Captain Frank Irving (Orlando Jones) will be a part of the end game in some form.

Why is Abbie so compelled by the Piper’s flute?

“Go Where I Send Thee” spins a darker yarn about the legend of the “Pied Piper” (Ryan Gray). A local family, the Lancasters, are cursed and when young Sara Lancaster-Weiss (Abigail Cornell) goes missing, her mother Beth (Francie Swift) is tormented…but it isn’t for the reasons you think. I found this reimagining of the Pied Piper tale quite refreshing in its darkness. The flute itself is macabre as it is made from human bone. The flashback to the American Revolution and how the Lancaster curse came about is sinister. It’s not only demons who have malice in their souls.

As the investigation gets underway, we learn Beth was Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and Jenny’s (Lyndie Greenwood) case worker when they were wards of the state. This connection and the circumstances surrounding Sara’s disappearance motivate Abbie to do things she wouldn’t normally do. The piper’s song doesn’t just affect small children.

During their search, Abbie and Ichabod (Tom Mison) run into an injured Hawley (Matt Barr). I’m still not quite sure how I feel about Hawley yet. It’s obvious his incentive to acquire the bone flute artifact is driving him to help Abbie and Ichabod find Sara, but there is an underlying compassion within him that he’s desperate to bury. I’m interested in learning more about Hawley and hope there will be a flashback to his encounters with Jenny while she was on missions for the late Sheriff Corbin (Clancy Brown).

I’m feeling a bro-mance simmering…but I still have my suspicions about Hawley.

There is a surprising turn of events during “Go Where I Send Thee” involving Beth and her daughter Sara. While I understand Beth’s reasoning, I don’t agree with it. Why isn’t she trying to find a way to end the curse rather than continue to give in? Sacrificing one child to save her four adopted sons seems irrational and mad. Thankfully, Abbie and Ichabod are able to talk sense into her, and possibly, yes possibly, figure out a way to end the Lancaster curse forever.

Meanwhile, back at Tarrytown Psychiatric Hospital, Irving does a bit of detective work regarding the biblical references of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. If the bible bursting into flames isn’t a sign of evil at work, I don’t know what is, and I’m not even religious. The conversation between Henry and Irving is both telling and unnerving. Irving finally realizes he is not as whole as he once was. The dream or vision he has while reading the passage in the bible also presents an interesting plot point. Will Irving be a tool for Moloch (Derek Mears) during the “end of days?” Noble is a master at his craft. Even though he is only in a few scenes in “Go Where I Send Thee,” his performance is captivating and spine tingling. Just a look and the inflection of his voice sends chills down my spine. Jones’ performance is quite convincing also. He looks like a haggard man at his rope’s end. Let’s just hope Irving’s vision doesn’t come to fruition.

There are a few humorous moments mixed into the darkness of “Go Where I Send Thee.” The pet names Hawley uses for Ichabod made me chuckle — “Pride and Prejudice” and “Shakespeare.” I feel a bro-mance coming on. And, after seeing how much Ichabod enjoys that cappuccino, I want one too.

The buyer who hires Hawley shouldn’t surprise you but what he does with the bone flute just might have you stumped. I know I am. The plot continues to thicken and there are still many questions left unanswered. I’m curious to see how things play out with the addition of Barr to the cast. I like the dynamic he presents and I’m anxious to see what the writers will come up with for his back story.

All that said, I would like to see more movement in the plot in the next few episodes. The promo for the show says we have three weeks of Sleepy Holloween coming up that hopefully will be entertaining. What I want to know is whether we will see Abbie and Ichabod’s bond be tested even further. Also, what is Sheriff Reyes’ (Sakina Jaffrey) back story? Will Ichabod get a driver’s license? He obviously knows how to peel out in a parking lot.
