She’ll Be Back. Review: The Vampire Diaries – “Gone Girl”

Season 5, Episode 15

Air Date: Thursday, March 6, 2014, 8/7c on The CW

RATING:

“So, which one of you is going to kill the elusive Katherine Pierce?” – Katherine Pierce

Observations:

I’m quite sure I never know what to expect when gearing up to watch a new episode of The Vampire Diaries (TVD). This week’s venture into the world of paranormal teens and the adults who hate them settles in on a dark time. Death overshadows everything in Mystic Falls, and if that weren’t ominous enough, the writers throw in a little revenge to even up the playing field. In spite of it all, “Gone Girl” leaves me a bit disappointed. The dark overtones don’t throw me for a loop, and I’m left wondering why “Gone Girl” misses the mark. It isn’t interesting, engaging, or shocking. “Gone Girl” reminds me of another episode I saw during another season. And we were doing so well, I thought.

Dun, dun, dun, dunnnn…

Katherine faces her firing squad.

Katherine (Nina Dobrev) is elusive no more. She’s been found out and all the kids rejoice. While I can’t say “Gone Girl” surprises me in any respect, I do enjoy the cinematography. Yeah, check me out. The scene where the main cast is gathered, paying vigil over a dying Nadia (Olga Fonda) is beautifully done—it’s dark and holds each cast member hostage. The gang is situated in what could only be described as their ‘league of super heroes’ pose. I find it interesting to see who’s standing next to whom, and the looks on their faces, which expose their true feelings for Katherine. Kudos to all for making a poignant scene turn into one of humor with mirrored looks of disregard marring the faces of each character Katherine has touched in some negative way. I have to give Dobrev credit for her portrayal. It’s the only thing keeping me tuning in each week. Now, I don’t know what I’ll do with Katherine being (presumably) out of the picture. TVD would be making a terrible mistake. I haven’t missed Elena (Dobrev) one bit and I’m not looking forward to her return.

Random Tidbits:

I have several feelings on love triangles—most of them negative—but Caroline (Candice Accola), Tyler (Michael Trevino), and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) do the love triangle right. (And get this, Klaus isn’t even on the show anymore and is still a threat!) Although I’m totally rooting for Caroline and Klaus, I used to love seeing Caroline with Tyler. If the writers hadn’t exposed his inner douche, I think I’d still like seeing the two together. At this point, I feel we’re beating a dead horse. Caroline and Tyler are done so let’s move on. I get the feeling Caroline already has.

Matt (Zach Roerig) surprises me with his reaction to Nadia. I didn’t think they make any type of connection, considering she uses him. I wonder if Matt feels left out in the relationship department and Nadia is his chance to have someone. I’ll have to think on that a bit more.

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) makes a return but his behavior is more befitting that of a sidekick. He barely says two words in Bonnie’s (Kat Graham) presence, and what he does say could be akin to an echo. I don’t like the way his characterization is going. He’s not just the hunky boyfriend. I’d like to see Jeremy return to his Hunter roots and start … hunting.

Final Thoughts:

Is Bonnie losing her touch?

“Gone Girl” isn’t horrible but it isn’t great either. I don’t expect things to go along as the writers would have us believe. There’s no way Katherine will just disappear in a gust of wind. She’s too much of a wrecking ball for that. But I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out.
