Review: The Vampire Diaries “The Reckoning” (Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Vampire Hunter? Klaus, That’s Who.)

Air Date: Thursday, October 13, 2011 8PM/7c on The CW

The gang's all here! Trouble abounds at Mystic Falls high.

This is by far the best fricking episode of The Vampire Diaries I think I’ve ever seen. All I can say is “Holy Effing Ess!” The suspense nearly kills me, waiting for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to show up to rescue Elena (Nina Dobrev) is inevitable, but seeing Stefan’s strength against Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was AH-Mazing! So much happens in this episode, I don’t know where to begin. Everything about “The Reckoning” rocks my socks! Tyler (Michael Trevino) is born anew; Matt (Zach Roerig) gets a taste of the other side; and Klaus gets a scare. Yes, you read that right. Klaus actually cuts tail and runs! So you have to wonder, just how deadly is this vampire hunter?

Observations:

I feel so much for Matt. He wants to be a part of the supernatural world like his friends. He doesn’t want to be on the outside anymore. He wants to be one of the gang again and I think it’s what’s been keeping him so introverted. And damn if he isn’t smart enough to figure out how to talk to his sister. But seriously, if he pulls something like that again, I’m with Bonnie (Katerina Graham), “As soon as you’re feeling better, I’m gonna kill you.”

I’ll admit to having very little concern about Elena being killed. She’s had Damon’s blood. She’ll just come back as a vampire. In fact, that might make me endear her more if she did. I’m tired of her being the damsel in distress. There’s a reason why I like Katherine (Dobrev) so much. She’s always in charge of herself whereas Elena needs to be rescued, told what to do, loved above all else.

“I promise you, I will never leave you again.” Damon’s words to Elena are touching but you know they will cause some friction. It’s not like Stefan is still in love with her or anything (Klaus took care of that) but the brothers are just that—brothers. I expect serious sibling rivalry to ensue in light of recent events.

I promise you will tire of hearing me talk about how much I love evil Stefan (Paul Wesley). The look on his face when Klaus calls him “Ripper…” seals the deal for me. Wesley is in his element as the vampire who relishes being a vampire. Emo Stefan is long gone and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. He kind of makes Damon look like an altar boy. Almost.

Now Matt can say "I see dead people."

Why is that doppelganger bitch wearing my necklace?!” I tell you, Rebekah (Clair Holt) brings serious comedy and excitement to each episode she’s in. She doesn’t try to be funny, it’s natural. I think the tone of her voice coupled with her sweet expression makes her appear innocent. But we know better, don’t we? She seems to be adjusting to life in the 21st century pretty well too. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her. She hasn’t taken on Katherine yet.

Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is by far the best vampire villain I’ve seen on television to date. (Seriously, Morgan was made for this role.) It’s his charisma—he can issue orders to kill someone in such a sweet way it makes you wonder why anyone would deny him. His swagger is intoxicating; his accent hypnotic; his dialogue so inviting you hang on every word and yearn for more. He is public enemy number one, and there’s only one thing—*cough* vampire hunter *cough*—standing in his way. Oh but won’t that be an interesting confrontation! You know Klaus won’t go down without a fight and Rebekah definitely won’t let him go at it alone. She is his sister after all.

Favorite lines:

Klaus compelling Stefan: “You will do exactly as I say, when I say it. You will not run, you will not hide, you will simply… just… obey.”

**

Katherine to Damon on going back to Mystic Falls: “You’re going to get yourself killed. The Damon I remember wouldn’t have been that stupid.”

Damon: “I wouldn’t have done it for you.”

**

Stefan to Elena about his being a Ripper: “I listen to the words coming out of your mouth and all I hear is the sound of your heart pumping blood through your body.”

**

The cliffhanger endings are major! I don’t even know what to say about what’s to come, just know that it will probably be something that we’ve never seen before. If I wasn’t hooked on The Vampire Diaries before, you can best believe it’s become my new obsession.
