Review: Bones, Season 6, Ep 18 “The Truth in the Myth”

Air Date: Thursday, April 14, 2011 9/8c

Grade: [rating=5]

Could the elusive and mythical Chupacabra be real? I know their teeth are quite valuable in the Vampire Wars game on Facebook. There is no shortage of tales regarding its existence, but Brennan (Emily Deschanel) doesn’t believe it’s real despite the strange circumstances surrounding Lee Coleman’s  (Leigh McCloskey) death. Lee was host of a television show called “Kill The Myth,” where he set out to disprove many myths and urban legends, leaving behind plenty of angry people who wanted to see him dead. Among the unusual suspects is an eccentric pet psychic who tells Dr. Sweets (John Francis Daley) to ask farm animals to vouch for her alibi.  Another suspect is Terry Bemis (R.F. Daley), a rival TV host, whose show was canceled. And yes, in case you’re wondering, R.F. Daley is John Francis Daley’s father. It was great they got to do a scene together, too.

The opening scene threw me for a loop at first. A couple, Kim (Sarah Baker) and Gary (Chad J. Williams), are out on a blind date of butterfly watching when they see a swarm of butterflies nearby. I had no idea butterflies had an appetite for human flesh and neither did Booth. “Whoa, whoa, wait. Butterflies eat dead people?”

As Hodgins (TJ Thyne) explains the butterflies’ unappetizing diet, I laughed out loud when a butterfly landed on Booth’s shoulder and he daintily shooed it away. I think the next time I see a butterfly, I’ll think twice about letting it land on my hand.

The question remains—who or what killed Lee Coleman? His body had been drained of blood and his heart ripped out of his chest. The evidence points to the mythical creature known as the Chupacabra. Investigating the evidence is one of my favorites, Mr. Vincent Nigel-Murray (Ryan Cartwright). He really cracks me up with his odd way of making amends as part of step nine of his Alcoholic Anonymous program. Apparently, he’s slept with Angela (Michaela Conlin), Cam (Tamara Taylor), and Brennan. One of my favorite scenes is when he makes his apologies to Cam. He tells her he stole some grocery coupons from her drawer and told his pals in Paleontology that they had an “extremely gymnastic sexual relationship.” Cam walks away aggravated while Vincent mumbles, “Shouldn’t have told her about the coupons.”  I want to see more of Mr. Nigel-Murray. I love his sense of humor.

We know Brennan is not a believer in mythical creatures, but when Booth tells her he saw Yeti while he was stationed in Nepal with the U.S. Rangers, she scoffs.

Booth: “OK, why don’t you just trust me here? Why can’t you just use that brilliant scientific mind of yours and at least admit that the possibility of what I’m saying here is true?”

Brennan: “You…you serious?”

Booth: “Just forget it. You know, you talk a good game, Bones, but when it comes down to it, you’re no different than people who were certain that the sun revolved around the earth.”

Brennan: “That’s not true.”

Brennan (Emily Deschanel, R) and Booth (David Boreanaz, L)

I think this is Booth’s way of trying to get Brennan to be less rigid with science and be more open to believing in things she can’t see, hear, or feel. I did love Brennan’s attempt at humor, trying to crack jokes while driving to the lodge where Coleman was staying. “I’m not familiar with the ‘Yada Yada Yada’ myth.”  I was, however, disappointed that Booth didn’t laugh. “I’d laugh but I’m afraid of driving off the road.”

Lodge owner Randy (Kevin Will) believes in the Chupacabra. His lodge used to host many guests who came in search of the mythical creature. Even his onsite wilderness tour guide, Melissa (Laura Eichhorn), reports that there have been sightings of the Chupacabra. How convenient is it that a guest is savagely killed by this creature during a lull in business?

As they reveal more strange evidence such as reptilian scales, it made me think of  other animals out there that haven’t been discovered yet. There is so much of the planet that has yet to be explored. Could it be possible for a creature like the Chupacabra to exist? I’m a bit of a conspiracy theorist like Hodgins; I believe that world governments may be hiding things from us. Food for thought?

By the end, Lee’s cause of death is revealed to be a hoax. I do think Booth’s comment about the Yeti got a response from Brennan, even though he was fibbing.

I am anxiously awaiting next week’s episode “Finder” with guest star Geoff Stults, (October Road, Happy Town, She’s Out of My League) because I would love for Stults to get a new show. ABC, you didn’t know what you had! Kudos to Hart Hanson for snagging him.

Brennan (Emily Deschanel, L) and Booth (David Boreanaz, C) enlist the help of Walter Sherman (guest star Geoff Stults, R) a professional locator.
