Paleyfest 2011 – Supernatural: I almost missed it!

Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 3pm PST – Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, CA,

Paleyfest 2011 – Supernatural panel

As I plugged the coordinates into my iPhone MapQuest application, I knew immediately something was amiss when it told me to take an extra LONG route just to get to the 405 North freeway. Where I live, I can shoot up the 110 North freeway to merge onto the 405 North towards Santa Monica.

My troubles don’t end there. MapQuest told me to take the I-10 West freeway to Santa Monica. WTF? I need to go to Beverly Hills, not Santa Monica. Against my better judgment, I foolishly continue my journey leading me the wrong way. Luckily, my friend who accompanied me to the Supernatural panel at Paleyfest tries re-calculating our coordinates on her phone and finds the right way for us to go. Fortunately, we left at 2pm PST. The event starts at 3pm PST.

After finally finding parking, we made it inside the Saban Theatre just in time to see Jensen Ackles (who plays Dean Winchester) walk across the stage, immediately followed by Jared Padalecki (who plays Sam Winchester). My heart was beating a bit faster because seeing them that close and in person…WOW! If you think they are hot on screen, they are definitely just as hot if not HOTTER in person. Their wives are so lucky!

If you don’t know what I am talking about then you need to tune in to the CW every week for a deliciously edgy “supernatural” show filled with dark and wry humor. If you’re squeamish…maybe you shouldn’t watch. There is a lot of blood and demonic references/depictions…did I mention a lot of people get killed on the show? If I didn’t, well, they do.

I’m ready to watch and listen to the panel consisting of show creator /writer/executive producer Eric Kripke, writer/executive producer Sera Gamble, actor Jared Padalecki, actor/director Jensen Ackles, actor Misha Collins (who plays Castiel), actor Jim Beaver (who plays Bobby Singer), and writer/director/producer Ben Edlund. Although Executive Producer Robert Singer isn’t present on the panel, the rest sing his praises and make some jokes at his expense as well. You can tell it’s all with love and admiration. The laughter filling the theatre is contagious!

There is one moment during the audience/fan questions when an elderly woman asks if she can give them gifts to say ‘Thank You’ for bringing her a slice of happiness each week. She makes a reference saying they are like her surrogate children. The woman is in stage 3 renal failure and her comments really bring somewhat of an awkward silence, with a few sniffles, to the room. After a barrage of jokes and hilarious laced commentary, to have a somber moment like this really casts a different light on what purpose the show holds for people. For this one woman, it is an escape from her harsh and dire reality of kidney failure.

And on that note…Please enjoy the photos I took from the event.

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.
