“I’ll never get out of here.” – Claire Randall

If only Dougal knew what Claire was really hiding.

Every episode of Outlander has me excited for what’s to come. Even though I think I’ll know what will happen—because I’ve read the books on which the series is based—I also like the element of surprise. Since I haven’t brushed up on the first Outlander novel for the series premiere, I’m a bit rusty on what’s supposed to be happening now. Each new episode takes me back to the time when I first read Outlander. Those were the days. It’s good to escape into another world, even if just for a moment. If, like me, you’ve fallen under the spell of this time-traveling, drama laden, action packed series, join me in thanking the writers, creators, and cast for the amazing job they’re doing. My Saturday nights would be quite uneventful if it weren’t for Starz. I don’t mind the double replay one bit. “The Way Out” opens with a touching scene, and ends with one filled with hope for our heroine. Who knows, maybe she’ll find her way out…

Under the Kilt

I really like Colum MacKenzie (Gary Lewis). There is something so charismatic about the character Lewis is able to tap into. You don’t pity Colum and his ailment; you may not pay much attention to it at all when he’s speaking. He holds an air about him that makes you pay attention to the man, not his legs. “Don’t tell me my ass offends ye?” A dose of that charm I mentioned. Colum is the “Laird” of the clan MacKenzie. He has a role to play, and more often than not, he never gets to let down his guard. Lewis flips between doting father and knife-wielding crazy pants without batting an eyelash. I’m interested to see how far Lewis takes his character, and what he plans to do when Colum finds out what Dougal (Graham McTavish) is up to.

Stockholm Syndrome

“I told myself this was a good sign, a sign of trust.” Why does Claire (Caitriona Balfe) feel this way? What evidence other than her “guards” lack of wanting to stand around watching her makes her think they trust her? They don’t know her from a can of paint. Hell, they probably don’t know what paint is either. Claire is fooling herself if she believes the tales she’s weaving for herself. Those men don’t trust her. They have a job to do and that’s it. They would rather spend their time imbibing, and that is the only reason Claire gets a break. Trust, my arse. Claire may have had the upper hand back in her time but she doesn’t now. I’m concerned she’s falling into a comfort zone she won’t easily get out of. She might believe her guards find her trustworthy; her interludes with Jamie (Sam Heughan) are friendly and unassuming; and, she’s fallen into place minding the surgery. Jamie’s presence puts forth a false hope for Claire. There is something there, but it’s flimsy. Not enough time has passed to prove a strong foundation is in place. Trust is a difficult thing to come by. I like Claire but fear she’s losing her grip of what’s going on.

Random Tidbits

Claire may think she has a friend in Geillis. But you know what they say about keeping your enemies close…

I keep forgetting there’s something about Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek) most won’t know just yet. Her character is not at all what she seems, well … aside from being a sneaky, sly fox. Yeah, she’s got something up her sleeve you won’t see coming. Pay close attention to that one. She drops clues about her true intentions with veiled subtlety.

Frank (Tobias Menzies) makes a quick cameo to remind us why Claire loves him, and why we should love him as well. He seems like such a standup guy. But you know what that means, right?

I think Claire can get Jamie to do just about anything for her. And he hasn’t even had the privilege of, um, well … you know. Is he smitten already?

Memorable Lines

Frank to Claire: “Woe but I the man who stands between you and what you set your mind upon.”

Foreshadowing much?

**

Claire: “You don’t mind me seeing your back?”

Jamie: “I don’t. You seem to have a knack for feeling sorry for it without making me feel pity.”

Oh, there’s more to it than that, I’m sure. Jamie feels a kinship with Claire. He sees something in her he respects.

**

Geillis to Claire: “We must do it again. Soon.”

You have to wonder why she’s so insistent.

Overall

Gone but not forgotten.

What say you about this week’s undertaking? Does “The Way Out” do it for you, or are you sensing a bit of predictability? Do you know how events will progress? Who’s the bad guy, the good guy, the soon-to-be lovers? I would love to hear from viewers who haven’t read any of the novels. Drop me a line in the comments section or tweet me @ellemoe to discuss.
