“Man is not what he thinks he is, he is what he hides.” – Grimm

After last week’s exciting return, Grimm loses a bit of momentum with “Trust Me Knot.” Picking up where “Fugitive” left off, Captain Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) takes no chances when trying to apprehend Detective Nick Burkhardt (David Guintoli), utilizing his power to call in the S.E.R.T (Special Emergency Response Team) to “take them down.”

“Trust Me Knot” is an interesting episode that reveals many facets of the story arcs to come in this final season of Grimm. Renard’s determination to get rid of Nick isn’t the only thing plaguing him. Something peculiar is happening to Renard… similar to the events that occurred when he saw blood on his body in season four. If you recall, Renard was shot at the end of the season three finale, “Blonde Ambition.”

Throughout season four, Renard saw his old bullet wounds bleeding again and again. His life was spared because his mother, Elizabeth (Louise Lombard), performed a ritual involving snakes. Could these new manifestations Renard is experiencing be happening because he’s wasting his new life on a cause that’s not worthy? Or perhaps the visions of blood on his hands, a bullet, and his gun are all hauntings from the spirit of his old friend Meisner (Damien Puckler). I know Renard shot Meisner at the end of season five, but I don’t believe he is truly gone. Wishful thinking on my part, perhaps?

While the story lines in “Trust Me Knot” revolve around several important events, the main point of this episode lies in the cloth that the magic stick was wrapped in. It seems the stick has taken a keen liking to Nick and doesn’t like to be separated from its new owner. The S.E.R.T. team finds out the hard way – never take a stick from its owner. Eve (Bitsie Tulloch) wants to examine the cloth but Nick’s reluctance leads me to believe the stick truly does have some sort of sway over him.

In the tunnels, Eve mentions how dangerous it is for Nick to carry the stick all the time, reminding him of what happens when someone tries to take it, “…it acted defensively, like it was connected to you…” I’m reminded of the “precious” from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The stick is Nick’s ring/precious and vice versa.

Diana (Hannah R. Lloyd) scares me. She’s more powerful than I think even she knows. Adalind (Claire Coffey) is aware of the power her daughter possesses but Diana seeing the writing and symbols on the cloth doesn’t bode well. I’m hoping the writers explore the depths of Diana’s powers in the remaining episodes. I’d love to see how much more Diana can do. And  don’t you just love Monroe’s (Silas Weir Mitchell) reaction when Rosalee (Bree Turner) agrees to babysit Diana and her baby brother Kellie?

Observations

Hank (Russell Hornsby) and Wu (Reggie Lee) definitely prove what ride-or-die friends they are to Nick in “Trust Me Knot,” especially when it comes to Renard. Hank and Wu are instrumental in putting a damper on Renard’s grand plans to take Nick down…at least for now. And I love when Wu says, “If he [Renard] comes after me, I’m telling you now, one of us is not walking away from it.” Get it, Wu! Way to embrace your Were-Wu!

The whole ‘trust me knot’ ritual is a bit lame. I’m reminded slightly of the “unbreakable vow” spell used in the Harry Potter films. I get the reasoning behind why Adalind suggests it but there are too many variables that could leave it in Renard’s favor over Nick’s.

Good old Bud (Danny Bruno). He may be skittish and jumpy, but he’s a loyal friend. As Bud goes to the tunnels with Nick to hide out, he worries about his family. “Oh God, do you think they’re in danger? Could they [Black Claw] try to get to you [Nick] through me, through them?” Despite the potential risks, when Bud says he’s willing to live down in the tunnels for the rest of his life if need be, it lets me know what a true friend he really is. Bruno has some great lines in “Trust Me Knot” and knows exactly how to deliver them.

Overall

“Trust Me Knot” is a very good episode that continues to move the story lines forward. I am curious about Trubel (Jaqueline Toboni) getting a call from another HW (Hadrian’s Wall) site and her abrupt departure. She seems to really want Nick to go with her. I am also wondering about the Wesen Counsel. We know they were wiped out in season five, but one member survived. Where is Alexander (Spencer Conway)?

What did you think of “Trust Me Knot?”  I’d love to hear from other Grimmsters. Leave me a comment below or tweet me at @judybopp. Looking forward to hearing from you!
